Following on from the
Switched On reissues last year, Stereolab are going the "deluxe reissue" route for
most of their Duophonic back catalogue...
3rd May 2019 sees the start of Stereolab's 7 album reissue campaign when 1993's 'Transient Random Noise-Bursts With Announcements' and 1994's 'Mars Audiac Quintet' will be the first albums reissued, via Warp Records and Duophonic UHF Disks, as expanded and re-mastered editions on vinyl, compact disk and digital.
Each album has been re-mastered from the original 1/2" tapes by Bo Kondren at Calyx Mastering and overseen by Tim Gane. Bonus material will include alternate takes, 4 track demos and unreleased mixes.
The initial vinyl editions will be pressed onto triple clear numbered vinyl with a poster / insert containing sleeve notes by Tim. They will also include a lottery style scratch card - all winners will receive a limited edition 12" EP
The band have also produced a super limited edition of 500 clear vinyl copies and 250 compact disks - each will have a numbered obi band made from 2" 24 track Stereolab master tape. ... These will only be available via mail order from the Duophonic Store.
...
Expect reissues of 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup',' Dots and Loop's and 'Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night' in August 2019 with 'Sound-Dust' and 'Margerine Eclipse' being released in November 2019
Guess the "Stereolab Store Exclusive Editions" have all sold out (pre-order bummer) but still...
They're also embarking on a UK/EU/US tour from May through October - got my tickets for the DC show this morning.

I have the records but it's good that they are available again. i bought Aluminium tunes again at the same time as buying it as a gift even though I had it already but I mainly did that because I got a deal on it.
Tour doesn't really sound my style, to be honest them touring without a new record seems a bit out of character but thats their business. Not sure if any of my kids might want to go or if they'd want me with them anyway.
I've been to see Cavern of Anti-Matter and Laetitia live recently and enjoyed it and bought records by both concerns and Hologram Teen (Morghane Lhote) and while I know the world has gone retrospective I've not.

I'm just keen to get the long players, as my compact discs go largely untouched these days...

What’s a good album to check out by them? I’ve read acclaimed reviews for Emporer Tomato Ketchup ages ago. Is this a good start?

I love Dots and Loops, Sound Dust, Mars, Margerine eclipse, and Aluminum. Actually, I think i like the one you named least.

ETK is so, so good. I also really like Transient Random Noise-Bursts With Announcements. I haven't spent a ton of time with their later stuff.

The Serene Velocity collection is a great starting point.

No Berlin date, while two of them live here and I keep bumping into them at concerts.
If they play LeGuessWho in Utrecht in November I'll stop complaining.

There's not really a right answer to that question. The first I heard/bought was the Super Electric single which is kinda like a Yé-yé Neu and I think most everything has something to recommend it. I guess floppy fringed indie guitar people would go early because there's more guitars but I'd go with Dots and Loops.
Dots and Loops was essentially a post acid record and one drawing colour from the then contemporary electronic music scene so you can hear the influence of Plaid, Mouse on Mars and Oval. You'd think that this might lead to a now dated record but I'd say no because a lot of those ideas are still quite current and also because the songs are great, I also think you need to take this and the
Fluorescences 12" a matching pair.. Later on Stereolab did a lot of interesting music and I still bought everything but they also got a bit arch at times, Dot's and Loops has it's eyezes on the prizes from front to back.

Yeah, Dots & Loops is one of those perfect albums with its own internal consistency and you could do a lot worse as a starting point. I came in at Mars Audiac Quintet and still love it probably best of all, but it might just be that I started there.
Anyway looks like they're going to play the UK while I'm in Oz and then the US while I'm in the UK, so serves me right for something I guess.
Distance-crunching honcho with echo unit.

Yes, that's a great album, I started with "Transient Random Noise-Bursts With Announcements" and don't feel cheated.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Fluorescences is excellent. Soop Groove #1 was a helluva good live jam.
D&L is a great place to start if you want something less caustic. TRNBwA is a natural entry point if you're not adverse to two-chord static drone. It's great to see their transition through various influences over time (VU, Can, Neu, Free Design, etc.) all while putting their own stamp on it so it's not totally derivative.
