Honestly, no*. I was genuinely asking because I have no clue as to the cultural relevance of Pearl jam.

From the point of view of a fan at the time, any cultural relevance they had was as a result of Ten. Part of my point in the other post was bands save up all their creativity as they grow, release a record, and often don’t reach that height again. It’s not a coincidence it was their best selling album either. They’ve had good songs since, but not a whole album full.

I don’t agree with Shadowplay that PJ, Nirvana et al were just the same old rock rehashed, they were rock shorn of (most of) the macho BS, and lyrically totally different, not about shagging birds or getting shitfaced.

Most outgrew it, sure, but it was a step forward, not the step backwards that we took next with Oasis and their ilk.

OT Geoff (and with apologies to the OP) but if you haven't seen it you might like this; JD Twitch presents Kreaturen Der Nacht, you probably have most if not all of it but it's definitely worth getting and it's got some very decent and fairly indepth sleeve notes. There's a few things you'd expect to be on it that aren't but this was mainly due to licensing. Best comp of it's kind since Mutazione - Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980 - 1988

David, thanks! Now Fred vom Jupiter is stuck in my head.... will definitely check it out. Like my relationship to German literature, I’m still playing catch up with the darkly golden era music, too.

And I agree with all the Burma reformation era praise. I’ll also wholeheartedly endorse post classic-first-three-albums Wire, too.

That Die Haut track is a killer too. Basically surf from '83 or so. Hardly anyone was doing that at that time.

Co-signed, came here to post this. I listen to the new album as much or more than the old stuff.

It's difficult to say when they peaked and when the hype around them drew in the most numbers but The Horrors have grown & grown in maturity &, dare I say it, originality as a band who started out in life as a great but pretty simplistic garage/psych band.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

I mean, PJ took on TicketMaster and really showed that the creative process can evolve.

Can’t get into nü Slowdive. If they put out another Pygmalion-esque thing they would have my attention.

Taking on Ticketmaster perhaps has some minor relevance, but it has nothing to do with them creatively.

honestly, the first horrors album reminded me of eighties matchbox b-line disaster. 80's matchbox were one of those bands i always thought should have been bigger.

i never really got into the horrors. i understood why people liked them, but they were not for me.
