Re: bands that dropped off
I think in today's day and age we're seeing and going to see more bands fade into obscurity after one or two hits

The Sword.......I mean they are still playing, but their sound took a left turn into boogie rock.

Sad story here. Apocryphon was the last record that brought the brutes and it was all downhill after that.budda12ax7 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 10:44 pmThe Sword.......I mean they are still playing, but their sound took a left turn into boogie rock.
Black rebel motorcycle club's releases have been very few and far between.
+1 to tortoise
I kind of feel like QOTSA dropped off too. Villians was pretty meh imo.

I always thought/hoped Fugazi would have another couple of good records in them.

Which is ironic because Kyuss had followed the exact opposite trend IMO. Every album was tighter and more coherent than the last. The first QOTSA album never reached the heights of ...and the circus leaves town, and went downhill from there if you ask me.
The artist formerly known as mbene085.

Could we say Kula Shaker? I love the first two albums... don't like the stuff after the reunion.

I'll join with all the folks pointing a finger at Interpol. They made one very good record right off the bat, that represented all that the band was capable of doing. They've never topped it or deviated from its template, even with Carlos D. moving on.
Another band that had a great start and sputtered out was Secret Machines. Now Here Is Nowhere was an absolute monster of an album. I listened to it constantly in the years after it came out, and I think it holds up now just as much. With the second album the air already started to drain out. Then, the one brother quits, and the third album was a total miss. Crazy to start so strong and then to just sputter out.
Trail of Dead was another band that started out like a hurricane, only to see the energy evaporate. I think they're still active but I wonder if its stil a living for them.
And this opinion probably won't be popular, but Neko Case built her self up into something incredible with Fox Confessor. I know she still does well live and still gets good reviews, but it was all down hill for me afterward. And I'm still surprised to think that, because Fox Confessor was just that awesome to me.

Yup, after nowhere each Ride album is more difficult to tolerate.
Fugazi after in on the killtaker is another I'd like to offer up.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

I love late period Fugazi. See other thread. They got both weirder and more poppy.

i think we have to include Blacklisted in the period of "peak Neko" -- Fox Confessor is great, but its immediate predecessor is truly astonishing. as has been said, "Patsy Cline meets David Lynch" -

I'm with you. Almost all of it up to Fox Confessor was amazing. I credit her for getting me into country music. Fox Confessor was like some gothic, part country, wholly unique thing. But all that came after was a diminishing echo of that work. I wish her no ill will though, and I'm glad other folks are still into what she's doing.

Re: bands that dropped off
I definitely agree that some bands just lose the creativity after an album or two. I think most barely make it past one album. The way I see it, a band that's been around for a while, has time to perfect their songs, and when that first album hits, it's awesome. Then, the label is likely pressuring them to put out an album to keep the attention, and the second album ends up as more of an album of rough drafts and ideas: things that could be awesome if given time to perfect, but usually aren't.
Thrice is one band that was that way. Artist In The Ambulance was amazing, and Vheissu is one of my all-time favorite albums, but after Major/Minor, they disappeared. They disappeared intentionally as Dustin wanted to try his hand at being a religious minister ( ), though that's not what they told the fans. Most fans, myself included, felt pretty betrayed by that because he lied. They're back now, but I haven't listened to anything by them in a long time.

I think I really was wired out-of-phase compared with most of life. Turn Blue is the BEST Black Keys album to me. I've enjoyed everything else they've done, but Turn Blue REALLY did it for me. It sounded like a 70's rock/R&B album to me. Dan still has plenty of ideas, and he's put out 2 solo albums since Turn Blue (one under his name, one under The Arcs) and both are amazing. I'd bet that both Dan and Pat wanted to get away from the fame for a bit.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 12:09 amthe black keys.
yeah, remember like 5 or so years ago everyone was talking them up like they were going to save rock music. then turn blue came out and yeah, i remember everyone was like "it's ok" then never listened to it again. i was never the biggest black keys fan so i dont really know what happened to them or why they never took off again. wikipedia tells me they are on hiatus. but i wonder why fans never reacted to turn blue the same way as el camino. sounded much the same to me.

The usual story, women & money ruin the band.eurotrashed wrote: ↑Wed Nov 21, 2018 7:44 pmI started listening to The Black Keys in 2002-2003 when they were making albums with two people in a basement. I was disappointed when they went pop, added members, and had this new fanbase. My brothers got to see them in some smaller venues before the album Brothers, however I only got around to seeing them in 2011ish in Central Park and it was just a bunch if people talking, ignoring the show, but could brag they were there. I think they were tired of touring in a van, got the money grab and are getting the easy money of producing and/or being baby daddy to Michael Branch.
