Anybody digging the new Deafheaven album? I'm one of those non-metal heads that have been into the band since Sunbather. I'll acknowledge that it was all the hype that put them on my radar, and it took me a long time to get over the vocalist. I'm still far from sold on the black metal screeching, but on the latest one it seems like they got it to fit with the music a bit better. I've seen them live and I get that the vocalist is the main force connecting that band with the audience, so he is brings something to the band other than gargling noises.
I don't think Deafheaven breaks much new ground with Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. But the mix is better, and the genre whiplash is even stronger. Some of the album even reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins when they were good. They seem to be doing less overt metal stuff. They are a pretty weird band for mixing all of this together.
