Maybe we can all finally admit that "Africa" is a great song, though.
No. We can't. Absolutely not.

I remember hearing this on Top Of The Pops when it first came out and that gawd-awful line (which, the internet tells me, is actually*) "As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti" absolutely floored me. The sneer has never left my face since.

By the way, the concensus on this song may be exactly the opposite of what you claim, Larry.

* For the record, I heard "Olympus" as "a lepress". I'm not sure which is worse, but I think we can all finally admit that is one of the worst lines ever to (dis)grace a pop lyric.
Have I told you lately that I love you? I'm wondering if Africa love is a US delicacy?

Was there not a joke flying about during that 80's that Toto caused the Ethiopian famine? One minute they were blessing the rains and the next they stopped.

I read that Africa is the internets favourite song*...I feel this is one of those 'I've met the man in the street (internet) and he's a cunt' moments. To be honest I wonder how favourite it is really, I doubt many of the favouriters actually own it or can get halfway through the song without instagramming the fact it's on. In fact I wonder if it's possible for the internet to buy it without twittergramming it.

This also explains why I avoid talking music with civilians.

But this is noteworthy, though, because the drumming is so bad. It's like if some famous band covered Van Halen, trying to do it straight up, but the guitarist didn't know the song and they released it anyway. I think that *I* could have done better behind the kit, and that's really saying something.
Ah OK I've not actually got round to playing due to it being Toto/Weezer which seems to be some sort attempt to get in the Guinness book of terrible world records.

Btw consider me disappointed that you've not bounced into the car thread to laugh at my new Frenchie (with a minor in Italian). I seem to recall you saying that 'Owning a French car is an act of masochism anywhere.' and yet I've gone the full S&M without the faintest nibble.

D

*though apparently yootoob favouriting also had a hand on this coming out on seven inch recently; Fra Lippo Lippi - Stitches and Burns, after garnering 20m plays. Which was interesting because it wasn't an official single, never had a video and it's a good bit after their truly golden period. Still there was only 500 and they didn't exactly sel out fast so, I really wonder about the credibilty of yootoob plays

I don't get why the internet would embrace Africa (borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties) and seemingly disregard their Dune score.
Man this is the real truth, the Dune soundtrack was great. It had such a dark, foreboding sound.

The movie had its flaws, possibly made worse by what could have been, but I still think it's a sci-fi classic.

Does anyone else think the line “Hurry boy it’s waiting there for you” is some white guy imagining Africans are begging to be re-colonized?

Africa must be free by 1983.

How did a thread about Weezer becoming the equivalent of a pub band playing to 50 on a Friday night in Basingstoke get to 3 pages?

And they were shite in the first place, bar one (I think) passable album.

They could have covered this, the situation could be a lot worse.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

The PERFECT soundtrack for an ex CIA operative to play in their G-Wagen en route to their security job at the blood diamond mine or supplying weapons for a coup.

I've liked that song since I first heard it in my early teens, and I say that completely without irony.
You mean you liked it before it was cool?

Fucking hipsters, man.

"Only time will tell if we stand the test of time" - Van Halen

"I've had enough now I want my share" - Moving Pictures
Nice try, but those lack the flesh-crawling pomposity that good people everywhere shrink in horror from whenever Toto's magnum opus is aired.

I feel like fuck all you people for not getting my joke about Weezer covering a Peter Tosh song that begins, "Don't care where you come from, as long as you're a black man, you're an African," and how funny it would be coming from Weezer. What an awful perversion of Peter Tosh's message of strength and unity to every member of the African diaspora it would be coming from a bunch of white guys. I mean, that's fucking funny.

I mean, I just don't get this forum.

Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti are both in northern Tanzania, but are a few hundred kilometers from each other. I've never been to the Serengeti so I can't speak to the visibility from there, but that would be kind of like spotting the CN tower from New York.

And it's taken this long to suggest that it would've been a fine cover if they keep everything of the verse/chorus etc as original, and to simply change the bridge....... to a Mastery or Staytrem
