SLEEP (the band) new cd out REJOICE....proceeds the weedian
After 20 years....20 YEARS....a new REAL SLEEP cd.
I never thought this would happen. NEVER....I'm giddy, I'm laughing, I'm eating Doritos,
After the taster of 2 years ago called The Clarity EP....DOOM is upon us.
Plug in your headphones or loud old school speakers and be lifted and sent to a better place.

It sounds pretty cool. Marijuanauts Theme gives us a new and much needed weed pun: "Hashteroid field". I like the song Sonic Titan but I already have the live version on dopesmoker, so I wish I could get just one more new song. I like this way more than the EP that came before it.

Damn, the new record is good. And I really love their comeback story. Screwed by a label that couldn’t see what a classic thing Dopesmoker turned out to be, broken up and going separate ways, only to come back stronger 20 years later. I’m old enough that I should have been aware of Sleep when they were first around but wasn’t. I’m not even a metal fan, but what Sleep does is singular. I think of their music as being what the Fremen would listen to while riding sandworms on Arrakis.
The Sciences may not be Dopesmoker, but it is great and it’s miraculous that it exists at all. Al Cisneros, by way of his work in OM, has become one of my favorite bassists and I think of his playing as the star here. On Dopesmoker he was a bit buried and playing support to Pike’s droney sludge. On the new one he cuts loose a lot more and the counter point is great. Sleep’s old drummer had a vibe the new guy lacks, but he’s still pretty good. Got tickets to see these guys this summer after catching them for the first time live last year. These guys have probably the most epic backine I’ve ever seen that wasn’t a pile of amps just for show.

I love the new drummer better than the old drummer. The new drummer totally plays inside the beat...16th and 32nd note fills and on the ride cymbal.
Great guitar sound, great bass.....turn it up.

Don't get me wrong, Jason Roeder is a fantastic drummer and this new stuff sounds great, but IMHO, Chris Hakius was THE sound for this band, warts and all. That said, I'll definitely be buying a copy of this new record! I think he works out just fine and it sound super though.budda12ax7 wrote: ↑Sun May 13, 2018 3:57 pmI love the new drummer better than the old drummer. Re: SLEEP (the band) new cd out REJOICE....proceeds the weedian
I'd hazard that Jason is the better drummer, but Chris just sort of had a more limited but focused thing going on that really worked on Dopesmoker. The guy who replaced him in Om is technically better too, but I think I like Chris' stuff was a bit more identifiable and unique. Still, I like all the drummers and on Leagues Beneath Jason really just kills it. Lotta space on the track, and he really gets in there between that slooooow riff. Great stuff. I love to see bands successfully resurrect and not just come back to play the old stuff.
