Suuns - Felt

Post by InLimbo » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:29 pm

FINALLY got my ears on this. I've been looking forward to it for a very long time. Listening through it for the first time right now, and 6 songs in I'm not in the least disappointed.

This band is seriously one of my favorites (or at the very least most played) of all time, and I'm glad they're able to put out some seriously quality stuff, and consistently at that. Not to mention a real treat live, and the drummer is one of the coolest guys I've ever met.

The vocals are getting eerily close to Thom Yorke, on first impression. Not necessarily a bad thing; a pretty good example particularly in Make It Real.

Some spectacular synth / soundcrafting work too throughout the whole album. Linking a singular song doesn't really do it justice, but this one has a cool video, so check out Watch You, Watch Me.

Great guitar work, and they're still somehow able to make cohesive, wonderful (are they pop songs?) without being hardly at all riffy. Almost anti-riff. Yes, they have pieces that are repeated, but they're something different than basic "riff". I really respect the cleverness of musicians, but the guitarists both quite great. A good example of this sort of anti-riff is in After the Fall (unfortunately can't find a clicky link).

Anyone else digging on this like me?

I think they are OK, obviously pretty good at what they do but the singer sounding like you say is a bit of a hurdle for me.

I played the It's a Fine Line remix of 2020 off Images Du Futur a lot and cursed it being digital only and I quite like that collab record with Jerusalem In My Heart.

The collab with Jerusalem in my Heart has been in the back of my mind to give a shot for some time, but for whatever reason I've not. Maybe your post will be the push in that direction, once I get the required obscene amount of listens of Felt under my belt.

Now that I've listened to the album a bit more, his vocals only seem to get in Thom Yorke territory in a couple / few songs at most. The rest of vocals are on the same page to the other albums (that sort of breathy / singing through the teeth thing), which is a good thing in my book.

I really love these guys.
Hold/Still hit me at the perfect time and it's been in regular rotation since it's release. There seems to be just enough immediate connection in Felt, to keep me coming back - and I like that. I can tell it's going to be a slow-grower but long-player.

That's exactly how I felt (ha!) about Hold/Still. It was kind of hard coming back to that album after seeing them live, which was really a totally different experience than the album, which didn't capture the energy. I think Hold/Still was actually recorded live, which might have something to do with it. Still a great album.

I forsee Felt not being an exception to the rest of their albums being in rotation for a considerable length of time.

Probably the best news about this is that for the tour, they're coming to a venue that's 2 minutes from my house, so no five-hour drive to see them again.

That's always great news! I didn't catch the previous record live, but am going to make a serious effort to catch them this time around. I was too lazy to check YouTube (sometimes, that just wrecks things for me), but when I listen to the record, I've occasionally wondered how it'd translate live. Your review is encouraging - thanks!

I saw them live and it was amazing! I still prefer hold/still and Les images du futur to Felt. For some obscure reason, this album doesnt quite make it for me.
