Nels Cline 4

Post by Telliot » Wed Mar 07, 2018 9:54 am

Have you guys heard any of this stuff yet?? He's once again teamed up with Julian Lage (an absolute monster in his own right), and created an absolutely fun juggernaut of a band.

Imperfect 10 :-*

Also, it looks as though Julian might be getting into the offset business.

The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Hadn't heard this before but will check it out! That rosewood Zaftig is off the hook, as an aside...

It looks like it's just a preorder as of now, and this may be the only song available at the moment.

Also, I may be mistaken, but I believe that Zaftig belonged to one of our members at some point.

Didn't this Zaftig belong to blake at some point (I know the same can be said of all Bilts in existence, but...)

I love Nels and many of the Singers and solo records, but this did not work for me. I always place a non-trivial probability that it was simply over my head and I am not sophisticated enough to get it. It just sounded like random noodling most of the time. Was about to get interesting around 3.30 but that did not happen.

Will check the rest of the stuff anyway.

I think I've got peak Nels Cline capacity. Everything he releases just sounds like this now.

Love the guy, but I can't listen to this stuff anymore.

Free jazz just sounds tired at this point. No risk. No danger. Nowhere to go.

Grumpy old man says what?

I see Julian and Nels pushing each other into somewhat new territory, respectively. but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, its definitely more structured than i thought. The middle bit of doodling is boring but it's not totally dismissible or tired (Steven!). :P
Its not the most exciting thing but its still cool to see the two guitarists challenging each other. Not to mention that double bass player is so good. What a player!

Also, anyone looking for a good, challenging jazz album, check out...

Jon Benjamin's album "Well, I Should Have..."

Skip the first track...

Yeah, it was kind of cool until the first julian solo when it became "hey, check out how fast I can play these scales!".

Look they are doing piecework give them a break, they clearly get paid by the note. After a few more meedles Nels will be able to buy some proper shoes and set aside those clogs and then it will all be hypnotic slooooowwwwwwwwww drangs...at least until next months rent is due.

D

Sounds a lot like early 80's John Scofield to me. The two on Enja. Accidental favs years ago.

Drums are on point though...
