This is the perfect vid for this thread:

Fred Armisen on Jazz
:D
His take on blues is also pretty good.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Also, anyone looking for a good, challenging jazz album, check out...

Jon Benjamin's album "Well, I Should Have..."

Skip the first track...
JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW.

The album I recommended is a joke album. It's made by H Jon Benjamin, the voice of Archer and Bob from Bob's Burgers, amongst others, and he went into the studio with some talented musicians to make a jazz album where he played piano.

He doesn't know how to play piano. ;)

I don't buy a lot of jazz, maybe only a couple a year and very very little 'guitar jazz'. Call me a shallow and sugary popstrel but even with jazz I like a tune or at least repetition, I don't mind folk going off on one but I generally like it over a fairly locked down groove, if everyone is getting busy with it I tend to tune out.

By way of illustration FYI the best 'Jazz' record I bought last year was by Hampshire and Foat which is probably too library pop and romantic for this thread.

Forgot the James Holden and the Animal Spirits record which was also totally superb but a bit more edgy and if you like that you'll maybe likeSzun Waves which was recorded in Holdens studio.

D
I buy lots of jazz, but very little of it is guitar led, an awful lot is pre 1970 and I too am a sucker for a groove.

It's funny really, I like jazz, I like guitars, but the two together, not so much.

Agree. I was talking about new records, I think I'm bought up on the old stuff but I should really write up a list and you could perhaps recommend me stuff off the back of it.

I encounter jazzbos occasionally and they usually sneer at my jazz records in a way I quite enjoy. apparently ECM isn't 'proper jazz' and I remember some goateed clown at a record fair who got all up in my shit after I told him I ADORED Comme À La Radio, which he described as 'jazz for girls', which only made me love it more. I think this also reveals the sort of toxic macho flipside of jazz and jazz fans, who sometimes remind me of metal fans.

Lovers is one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded IMO.
:-*
A really really great album.

I saw Lage and Cline together at the Festival international de Jazz de Montréal. It was great live. I bought the record and rarely listen to it. It's the kind of music that is better live, when you can see the artist perfoming.

I like jazz, it's the type of music I listen the mosty at home.
I like jazz with or without guitar. I dont like cheesy jazz-rock (and cheesy sax). But there are plenty of jazz guitar album that are not cheesy or over-the-top.

I recent jazz album that I enjoyed alot is this guitar-piano duo from Montréal. It's kinf of a jazz-folk album...

ECM is where I discovered Bill Frisell, whom I have followed, with great reward, ever since his days there in the 1980s.

I find that I listen to Bill's records far more than Nels'. Oh, and Jim Campilongo's, too. Both he and Bill anchor their music solidly in the melody, and, in Jim's case, the groove. Jim always works with a stomping/swinging rhythm section.

Sounds like a good idea.

Macho idiot fans in any genre are entirely unnecessary, but jazz & metal do seem prone to them.

Hey now... I'm a Nels fan for sure but the drumming was the catchiest bit of that clip for me. That's all.

Oh, I agree... I wasn’t “calling you out” but - rather - drawing attention to what was an overlooked, astute observation...

I have to say I agree. But I hope the full album will be interesting!

i don't know what the hell's wrong with you people. :D
i've been listening to a lot of music this week, and
that's easily the most fun and coherent thing i've heard all week. i'm on my third pass -
nary a dull moment. if i could scare up any criticism, it's that they had to rein it in and wrap it up at under 5 minutes for some reason. i feel it might have benefitted from at least one more go around.
