Some tunes with Bass VI on

Post by dryjoy » Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:05 pm

Here’s some tunes from my band. They all have some sort of Bass VI on them - either my Squire (I really want a Fender of some sort at this point as I have come to rely on it as a main instrument) or our drummer’s homemade EB6 kind of thing.

Love the 9/8 groove on "Avalon..."

Just getting to "Volveau" and that tight 5/4 groove is giving me the upfront bass I was hoping for on the last one. Is that a synth double tracking the bass, or the bass run through a synth/filter?

Of course, as a VI player myself, my only criticism is that the Vi isn't more upfront in the mix on that first track (because the only thing better than VI is MOAR VI), but I'm digging it!

Thanks for the comments.

On Volveau, there is an actual synth (Nord Lead 1) doubling as well as a synth bass kind of filter on the bass itself.

Cool, I thought I was hearing elements of both those things so that makes sense. I'll try to give all of them a deeper listen when I get the chance. I don't know what you guys identify with in terms of genre, but there's a cool sort of math-funk thing going in the tracks I've heard so far and I'm definitely enjoying it.

We never know how to describe ourselves, but math funk has come up before.

Sound Opinions on NPR had a feature on the Bass VI a couple months ago.

Just giving a friendly bump to this thread since I've been enjoying the OP's band. Good stuff!

Well, thanks! We’ve got an album recorded which we’re working out what we’re going to do with. Probably self release via the usual digital outlets but we haven’t decided whether a physical release in some form would be a good idea.

Great stuff! I missed this thread the first time around. Thanks for sharing!
I kick myself for not getting a Bass VI yet. By the time I get around to it, they'll probably be rare again.
