In my opinion better than Loveless.

Agreed. Their best album.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

I think it's an amazing album. Having said that, I have never heard anything like Loveless before or since. I remember hearing it in high school and it felt like hearing music from an alien culture or something. I think Lose My Breath is as good a song as anything they've done though. Loveless just has a really, really powerful vibe and sound quality as an album. Probably the memories and associations I've built through the years with that record have a lot to do with that opinion!

Are people just saying it's better than Loveless entirely because it's so obviously not? Similar to when people say Dio era Sabbath is better than Ozzy era Sabbath?

Ha ha! I think Dio is hilarious and badass but, yeah. For me there's no comparison at all. The first time I heard Loveless I was literally taking off in an airplane, so that first track is burned into my memory forever. Watching the ground recede and feeling my ears pop. It felt like being blasted into another universe. I highly recommend Only Shallow on takeoff!

Dio may not have fit with the band but Holy Diver is definitely better than anything Black Sabbath released after 1980.

Dio was well named...a metal singing god.

O.K. that out of the way...

MVP is the only band I can listen to on low volume and it still sounds like my ears are ringing. It's loud no matter what volume. I DO appreciate Isn't Anything though it has been a while. I listen to Loveless more. What I love is that behind the din there hides some really pretty pop melodies.

'Loveless' has some songs that I like more than anything on 'Isn't Anything', but I like the latter as an album more. I like both and I really hope my copies of the reissued come in soon...i ordered them in what October? I'd have to check the thread but it's been a really long time.

I'll take Dio Sabbath over Ozzy Sabbath any day. They were totally different bands, really, but I've heard Ozzy Sabbath over and over to the point where unless the song is supernaut, I'd rather not hear it at all.

But Dio I can't get enough of.

I think loveless is a much better album but i've listened to it so many times that i can't listen to it over and over like i used to be able to but i still really like it. though it doesn't help that there's so many 2010s shoegaze revival bands that just emulate *that* sound and it's kind of boring to listen to now

my favourite MBV era at the moment is the pre-bilinda twee era. the new record and sunny sundae smile are so fun.
the reeeeally early cramps rip off stuff is pretty rubbish though. (cute, but not very good)

I think I'm the same way with Led Zeppelin. Outside of maybe 3 songs I can't really listen to any of it anymore. I'm curious whether you find humor in Dio's vocals or do just rock out hard to his whole thing?

Yeah, Zeppelin has a couple songs I like and the rest I've never been able to stand. Dio, though... I have to admit his whole wizards and shit thing is corny, but that said I love it unironically. That late 70s/early 80s fantasy crap can just be fun, you know? And what a set of pipes he had. I appreciate Dio more as time goes on. He makes me happy.

Ha Ha. Yes! Wizards and shit are totally cool and I get what you mean. Holy Diver and Stand Up and Shout ARE totally fun. And he was an amazing singer no doubt. I love that he just unapologetically owned his whole shit. I'm not really a metal guy but he serves a clear purpose for me at times. Good fun.
