First ones that come to mind are Ty Segall and Charles Moothart. CM, in particular, has a great feel for melodic heavy psych/stoner melodies/counterriffs/lead lines.

Re: Current guitarists you like.
The second Alvvays album has gotten some good reviews and it's growing on me, but I thought Alec O'Hanley's guitar work on the first album was soo brilliant (I think he's still in the band and everything, it's just less busy on Antisocialites).

Also, I never find myself listening to Oh Sees, but whenever I run across it on youtube I love watching John Dwyer play guitar.

Re: Current guitarists you like.
ATDI released a (not altogether spectacular) new album last year so he counts as current IMNSHO.
I'll add Scott Munro from Preoccupations (Viet Cong) for his different take on 12 string playing, and Daniel Christensen (also Preoccupations) for providing the counterpoint.
"I don't know why we asked him to join the band 'cause the rest of us don't like country music all that much; we just like Graham Lee."

Got something cooking right now. It will not be as guitar-centric, nor as jazz-oriented.PJazzmaster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 3:52 pm↑ well deserved !!! Hope you will soon make another solo record.
Got a busy year of sideman work ahead... LOTS of touring... so it's a matter of "getting around to it." I'll try hard to push to complete it.

I agree with a lot of the players listed here. I'd also add Blake Mills and Afie Jurvanen to the mix

Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu.
He’s not a virtuso, and a lot of his guitar playing can come off as unremarkable at first glance, but I really like how the guitar parts drive the songs rhythmically instead of making synth pop songs ‘rock’ with misguided guitar solos.

Re: Current guitarists you like.
My first love in guitar terms was the sparkling Rickenbackers of George Harrison and Jim McGuinn (as he was still known), updated and adapted by Johnny Marr and Peter Buck. I guess the arpeggiated, double-stopping thing isn't venerated as widely as the meedly-meedly, being somewhat within the reach of most players, but I'll take melodic content over 'technique' every time.
So....still current, though I haven't got round to catching up with their newest LP, I think Alasdair MacLean of The Clientele is part of that same lineage and deserves an honourable mention for playing what to my ears is one of the finest pieces of guitar playing I can think of, one which never fails to stop me in my tracks to just listen: We Could Walk Together.
In general terms, I'm a sucker for finger-style acoustic guitar. It's almost unfair to single anyone out in this field, but a cheaper ticket than yer Richard Thompsons, Graham Coxons or Donovans would probably be Alasdair Roberts, as fine a picker as you could hope to see and hear. Here's a random Youtube pick, showing how easy he makes it look.
In classic rawk terms I'm sorry I missed the boat while Verlaine and Lloyd were still playing together, but I've seen plenty of my other favourites in action, so I can't complain.
Proving more isn't necessarily more, the sparse playing by the anonymous guitarist of Tyneham House has been a recent touchstone too and the reason a nylon-strung classical became my living room guitar. I might well go and see him/her live if I knew who they were.

Re: Current guitarists you like.
The player on Tyneham House is Michael Tanner of Plinth.. He's a bit of a genius IMO and I totally recommend his three part guide to droning medieval music on NTS; Cantus Orbis.UlricvonCatalyst wrote: ↑Fri Jan 19, 2018 12:56 am

Totally agree on the bard of Pollokshields, he the master and he signs and plays at the same time too.
