I just heard a reference to this in a banking commercial. Speaking of a small business owner of a used record shop: "He can tell you about Northern Soul, but not about investing, etc". (or something to that effect).

This must be the new hip genre.

It goes a lot farther than the top 500. Guys who have been into the music for 40 years are still finding new treasures, which is cool. I caught the bug a few years ago and have been obsessed with obscure soul ever since. Part of it is the era it was made, part of it is the raw talent in these groups that sometimes only did a few 45's... you can just hear the raw emotion on wax, and there's nothing like it. And it branches into a lot of cool subgenres, like Belgian popcorn, chicano lowrider oldies, beat ballads, etc.

I don't know much about what separates Northern soul from regular soul/60s r&b but our band goes down well with the NS crowd.

Northern Soul has been dying for years now as the audience ages out - most of the remaining nights are hanging on with scooter club rallies and ska weekenders because of the demographic overlap. It's a real shame because it's a big part of UK alternative-history, and a really interesting transatlantic cultural moment in general (if only in my opinion!). Obscure regional black music from the US that somehow became a totally new cultural identity when picked up by white, working-class teenagers in the industrial deep North of England.

Yeah I know a few guys that used to play it out but they moved on or jacked it in pretty much due to the mortifying embarassment that infests anything related to scooteristing and that whole revivalist dressing up thing.

They also just got bored with playing the same records all the time and the really narrow genre constraints.

A few years ago I was working on the supposed modern end of a clothes label that panders to that mode revival pish and on a scientific cool scale I'd rate it a solid 'hair metal cruise with personal appearance by David Hasselhoff'.

Yeah a club opened up near me that seemed to be strictly northern/r&b for a while. Didn't last long before they opened it up to different genres and scenes. The sixties cosplay mod revivalists love what our band does (hammond-based soul/r&b/psych covers) and they're good craic but I wouldn't want it to do it every weekend like some do over spring/summer.
