To answer the titular question, fuck all, apparently. I always assumed it was British soul music. I was clicking on shadowplay's links and thinking "I thought that was American." It took Wikipedia to set me straight.

Dexys were definitely northern soul fans - their name actually comes from the Dexedrine phet tablets that used to go round at the club nights.

A lot of NS is very wedded to a really tightarsed 60's remit these days and sometimes the DJ's seem to lack any understanding that it's music for dancing not listening, so most lists stick to this but I'm a big fan of Gloria Ann Taylor.

Gloria Ann Taylor: Love Is A Hurtin' Thing which has some spunky geetar on it and relaly sits at the nexus of soul/funk/proto disco. My Maelficent and I recently totally hussled to this cheek to cheek at a wedding, apparently we were 'Strictly' quality or 'merely not terrible, don't get ahead of yourself' if you listen to our kids.
