What are your favorite albums NOT from your youth?
[This is probably more of a topic for people north of 30, but younglings may feel free to contribute.]
I feel like way too many of us music fans are stuck in a loop from all the music we loved, and still love, from say, from ages 15 to 25. OF COURSE you are always going to love that album you heard that one summer when you were with your crush, or downtown, or on that great road trip, or getting your mind blown for the first time when you were on some substance.
What about now? You're an adult with a job and no free time. I used to be able to just gorge on albums. Now I can't nearly as much.
Here are a few of mine. They are not based on nostalgia. I like to listen to them for the way the music makes my brain feel. It's a little harder to get that same high I used to get, but it happens regularly with songs and a few albums.
The Cavern of Anti-Matter's two full length albums
Best Coast: Crazy For You
Beach House - just about everything they've done.
Tame Impala: Currents
I fully respect Shadowplay's endless quest for music, new and old, and I endorse it. I find that a lot of the stuff that I liked when I was younger really doesn't resonate with me these days (with plenty of exceptions). I like a lot of stadium dino rock just fine, but I never thought it was the end-all-be-all then or now, and the same goes for all the earnest indie rock I liked in my 20s.
Is the person who harps on about their nostalgic opinions more of a strawman? I get a little sick of some of my friends (known from my band days of college) harping on about the same old music over and over again.

I'm well north of 30. Beach House, Deerhoof and Four Tet are some of my more recent favorites.

A Place to Bury Strangers, Exploding Head
The Raveonettes, Lust Lust Lust
Beach House Teen Dream and Bloom (tied)
Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs

I've got quite a few, some of which are old, but new to me and others that are just plain new.
Miles Davis- On The Corner
Lonelady- Hinterland
Courtney Barnett- The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas
Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog- Party Intellectuals
Wilco- Ashes Of American Flags
Nels Cline with Gregg Bendian- Interstellar Space Revisited
The Besnard Lakes- ALL OF THEIR ALBUMS!
There are tons more, because 25 is now less than half of my life so far and I'm always on the lookout for new music.

Re: What are your favorite albums NOT from your youth?
I feel like I had a lull where I wasn't really that engaged in music between the ages of 25-30. In the last year or so I've definitely gone back down the rabbit hole, and in great ways.
Lately?
The Royal They - S/T - Biased because they are friends of mine from Brooklyn that we play with quite a bit, but they are INCREDIBLE and I imagine you'll all be hearing about them eventually. Well worth checking out if you're into heavy and weird music but also pop and heroic melodies.
Billy Bragg - Worker's Playtime - Hit me just after a break up of a really big and important relationship and just seemed to fill the void so incredibly. Led me down the path of the rest of his work, but this one is without a doubt my favorite.
Madonna - The Immaculate Collection - Not an album persay, but the genius of those first ten years or so of singles really got to me in the last year. Incredible stuff.

And you find out life isn't like that

Getting close to 40, so I’ll play.
The Raveonettes - the last 2 or 3 years everything from Lust Lust Lust to Observator have become some of my favourite albums.
Beach House, all good but specifically Bloom.
Cigarettes after Sex - one speed, but good
The National
Passion Pit
Ryan Adams - he was around in my 20’s, but I just started paying attention
Alvvays - CANADIAN so I think I have to mention them
I’m probably forgetting something.

Not counting anything from my teens or twenties, these are probably my favorite three records discovered this decade. Better late than never!
Supertramp: Crime of the Century
Morphine: Cure For Pain
Steely Dan: Aja

A couple albums that for me have been kind of out of the blue (as in, don't really connect as directly to things from my youth), but REALLY stuck with me in a meaningful way:
Alvvays - S/T

Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport

My three favorite acts of the 90's right there.
