Oh and apologies if I'm derailing this thread.
The whole idea of thread is to talk about newly discovered music, so I'm fine with it. :)

I majored in history, so from my perspective, it's important that for all of us to know where music came from. I have to understand that we all travel different musical paths of discovery. Maybe I knew of a band 20 years ago that someone else will fall in love with tomorrow. As long as someone wants to discover and enjoy music they haven't heard before that's great. I have certainly missed plenty of bands like this and am grateful when gems come to light.

Here is a potential derailment, bands that you listened to in your youth, who are somehow still making or started making good albums again 10, 20 + years later.

Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves is pretty good, but we were dead before the ship even sank is my usual go to album for them. Strange for a band that I loved for a few years in the late 90's and thought I was done with 17 years ago.

Slowdive - The new s/t album is great, I'm still listening to it at least as much as their 90's output

Low - C'mon,The Great Destroyer and pretty much anything since they signed to Sub Pop. I've been listening to them since Trust, but the later period stuff is what I usually turn to these days.

Dinosaur Jr. - Farm is easily my third favorite album of theirs. Give a Glimpse and Beyond are up there too.

Afghan Whigs - One of my all time favorite bands that definitely still delivers. Do the Beast and In Spades are great, better than their late 90's output.

Listened to this record today for the first time in a long time (15 years?). Still awesome.

That slowdive album is amazing. So impressive that they still sound so good after so long. I also like the recent Ride reunion album in a similar vein. This is a great thread because I feel like I'm always disappointed with "new" music. I hate listening to all old stuff like an old man, but so often new bands just sound like bad versions of older bands to me.

One act that's more recent that I really like is Blood Orange. Obviously very different from some of the others we're talking about, but that's one of the newer artists I feel OK about holding up against classic records.

The Doves-Lost Souls.
Great choice. Huge fan of Doves. Really, all their albums are good. Frankly, all their songs are good.

Stooges - Raw Power
Wire - Pink Flag
Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk
Gang of Four - Entertainment
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics
The Shangri-Las - Golden Hits of the Shangri-Las
Etc etc etc
This is EXACTLY my record collection from my late teens early 20's. Still have some of it on vinyl. I got to see Gang of Four a couple of years back. Even with the new singer, I thought they were still pretty good.

When it first came our, Entertainment by GoF was one of those records that completely changed the way I thought about music. Growing up in the land of (and time of) the Gospel according to Lynyrd Skynyrd, it was a real eye opener. And it it's still just as listenable today. What an awesome record.

I forgot to mention
Wilco's YHF
Johnny Cash - American Recordings
James McMurtry - Live in Aught-Three

Low -- Ones and Sixes

MBV -- I skip the last two tracks and even with that it is still one of my favorites.

Slowdive's album this year is amazing.

Moon Safari came out when I was 20, so I was exiting my youth period, however, I only listened to it in my 30s, so I guess that qualifies?

I'm 28...when I think of my childhood, I remember the terrible 90s radio country I was forced to listen to in the car. Hindsight I kinda dig some of that music now. Anyway, I started really appreciating music in my late teens. I was mostly into 80s pop, modern metal, and some pop 90s alternative.

Now that I'm older I have been able to discover the songs that had always seemed to escape me.

Slowdive's new record (and everything prior) - just bought it. Still don't have an adequate record player so it hasn't been opened :fp:

The War on Drugs - A deeper understanding ...same as above

The Cure - Disintegration...really just anything by the cure in general

The Cranberries - No need to Argue (although this one's tricky as it's from my childhood..I just didn't listen to them much then)

Have started to get into Loveless/MBV. I've been in a bit of a musical drought and lately have been prettt happy with some new music I've been hearing

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Push the Sky away” also.
The DeSoto Caucus - Offramp Rodeo
Giant Sand - Heartbreak Pass

Some of my friends on Facebook (I posed this same question to them) just seem to like new bands playing the same style of music that they liked 20+ years ago [not much innovation going on in the world of garage punk, which generally eschews that sort of thing.]
Some people think it’s still a good idea to like Guns’n Roses. After Chinese Democracy. Pure retromania...

Lemon Twigs - Do Hollywood
Man, this sounds great. Also as far as I can tell, the drummer uses the oversize paistes and istambuls which - in my humble opinion - are the greatest cymbals out there. I would probably listen to it just for the drum sound, but the songs are also really good. Really cool thread, as I probably never would have found this myself.
