In Rainbows

Post by dezb1 » Thu Nov 09, 2017 8:49 am

Is slowly edging it's way to becoming my favorite Radiohead album. Some of the best guitar tones ever put down on tape.

It grew on me more than I expected but I still rate others over it (although Jigsaw Falling Into Place is a brilliant song!)

What surprised me was that it was 10 years old!! Where the hell does the time go?

One of my favorite Radiohead albums, although I don't think anything will ever knock OK Computer off its pedestal. First album aside, I tend to fall in love with all their music, even if it isn't immediate. Kid A and Amnesiac took me almost a year before I realized how amazing they were...I still think they should have been released as a double-LP.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Haven't really liked a full album from them since Hail to the Thief. I didn't even bother listening to their last album because the two tracks I heard bored me to death.

Same. I think most of their stuff is boring now, except Kid A and a little of Amnesiac. FWIW I loved In Rainbows when it came out and it brings back really good memories of where I was living and what I was doing at the time with my life (shitty house near university/playing and listening to music when I should've been studying).

Yeah Ok Computer has always been my fav with In Rainbows a close second, but in recent years i feel like Ok Computer isn't standing the test of time as much. It's not a perfect album in my eyes because of No Surprises, Karma Police, Fitter Happier. Plus songs like Climbing Up The Walls and Airbag to me sound so much better in certain live recordings. In Rainbows has the consistency tho.
If OSG has tort me anything...

In Rainbows just sounds so warm and beautiful. One of my favorite, best produced albums ever. Particularly bass sounds. Colin plays some killer stuff on it, and sounds fantastic. I am a huge Radiohead fan and I remember when it came out. I just can't believe i've had the deluxe edition on my shelf for 10 years already. terrifying :D

I feel stupid. I was totally thinking of King of Limbs when I posted my first post. I dug out In Rainbows just to see and it turns out I do like 98% of it and remember most of those songs.
King of Limbs on the other hand felt too much like a Thom solo album featuring Radiohead. Good Morning, Mr. Magpie turns out to be the only song on the album I can really dig long term.
I may finally give the new album a listen, just because I'm thinking I should.

Nothing will ever top the feeling I got from The Bends and OK Computer. I'm still a guy who gets riveted by energetic guitar music. I appreciate the electronics and what not, but I just love tracks like "My Iron Lung", "Airbag" and "2+2=5".
Kid A and Amnesiac came out when I was experimenting quite a bit myself with music and life. They didn't jar me at all. I found the first listen of Kid A to be disappointing, but after a second listen I realized how it flowed so well from beginning to end. A Dark Side of the Moon for my generation. A perfect bedtime album.
Amnesiac has a screwed up tracklist. It doesn't flow at all. Opposite of Kid A. I rearranged the songs on a burned CD a week after it came out, so I could enjoy it better.
Hail to the Thief was a return to form as well as an evolution.
In Rainbows was mellower than I expected, yet still great.
King of Limbs... as I said it feels like Thom feat Radiohead.

I'm rambling.

As I understand it, Amnesiac was a bunch of stuff recorded around the same time as Kid A. I kinda like to think of it as one album, and I ignore tracks I hate like "You and What Army?". Everything in Its Right Place is amazing, and I like Pyramid Song. I loved In Rainbows when it came out because it sounded joyful, unlike OK Computer and a lot of their stuff. I was glad Radiohead seemed like they were in a good place and having fun.

lol you and whose army? is my fav on amnesiac. funny.

As far as King of Limbs goes, I didn't dig it the first time I listened but each listen grew on me and then it clicked after I saw the Live Basement video, sooooo good, the songs just pop on that recording. I think over all it's a better album than amnesiac and gives Kid A a run for it's money. HTTT is patchy af to me and their latest album is dog shit. First time I've ever said that about a Radiohead album, the only album that has truly sucked no matter how much I try to get it to grow.

Probably my #2 favorite album of all time. The soundtrack to a very special time in my life that instantly brings back great memories...I try not to overplay it for that reason :D
