Girl I was crazy about in high school showed me some stuff from The Bends (*), so I bought it. She then recommended I check out OK Computer. Fell in love with both (though OK Computer took longer to get into), so I bought everything I could of their's. I listen to Pablo Honey for awhile, but never really liked it. I realized that I loved the songwriting, but anything after OK Computer was boring to me. I wanted to like Kid A since it was SO revered, but I never got into it. Picked up Hail To The Thief and In Rainbows when they came out. Hail To The Thief was a bit better than Kid A, but I never got much into it. I'm not sure I ever even popped In Rainbows in before I sold it. That said, my favorite song of their's is probably Knives Out.

*Remember when music stores at the mall had the big muff-style headphones where you could scan the UPC of a CD and listen to a 30-second preview of every song? THAT makes me feel old :D

I just looked it up...62% of people chose to pay nothing and in the end the average sale was $2.20, which just goes to show that honesty boxes don't work. [...]
paying $0.00 is not dishonest, radiohead gave it as an option. I firmly support the name your price system. I'm 100% more likely to listen to a band that offers it. :)
If OSG has tort me anything...

OK not dishonest, let's just go with arseholeish. If I literally thought some music was worth nothing, I'd not bother downloading it at all.

I'm still impressed by how they released it--mind blowing at the time, now de rigeur.

(Wait, you can put 0 in the payment box??)

I'm curious as to how widespread this is with actual unit shifting acts. Radiohead seemed to abandon it and their business model is more slanted to price gouging an extra fiver on their vinyl over the average and releasing fancy U2 style editions north of £50 IIRC?

I just looked it up...62% of people chose to pay nothing and in the end the average sale was $2.20, which just goes to show that honesty boxes don't work. Funnily a farmer recently told me he was closing his fresh egg honesty box at the gate of his farm, which I'd used regularly because people were just taking and never paying.

If I recall correctly, they actually made more money than they would have if they released it through a major label.

I guess that's just a testament to how fucked up the music industry is (or was - I don't really follow the economic side of it all that closely) though.
