Anybody like the Gun Club?

Post by Larry Mal » Fri Sep 08, 2017 1:41 pm

I've been listening to them a lot lately, so I thought maybe someone might not know much about them at this point:

This is probably their all time classic, I'd guess:

Jeffrey Lee Pierce was a hell of a lyricist and songwriter, man. A very interesting guy.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Big fan here, particularly of their later stuff and the Mother Juno album more so than the earlier stuff, with that said it's all great. Theres a book of JLP's lyrics and writings that was published several years ago, but is now long out of print and expensive, definitely an incredible, and unique, lyric writer. He has a couple of solo releases also which I don't mind, but which were never as good as the stuff he did with the Gun Club.

Yeah, I looked for that book, it was like $250!

Great band, saw them a lot in the early 80's and I still pop out to see Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds when the opportunity arises.

Great band! I also like JLP solo album Wildweed. Suffers a bit from the production but great songs!

Feel similarly to nrs24985 about JLP's solo endeavors but I've ADORED The Gun Club since I was a tween. I think I'll put Miami on this afternoon :-*

Yep love them. Not sure why but the album cover of Miami make me feel a real sense of nostalgia.
I believe Nick Cave recorded some unrecorded Gun Club songs with guests few years ago, might be worth checking out.

There's a double elpee on glitterhouse called; We Are Only Riders. I'd need to go and play it to remind myself but I think the David EugeneEdwards song and the one's, the Sadies, Debbie Harry and Mark Lanegan/ Isobel Campbell do are highlights.

There might even have been a thread on it.

Edit; Actually there was, I started it.

It's worth mentioning the other two "Sessions" albums - "The Journey is Long" and "Axels and Sockets" - lots of the same people from "We Are Only Riders" (and a few more to boot, including Iggy Pop, Mark Stewart, Thurston Moore, etc.), and worth seeking out if you enjoyed the first one.
