The Evil Has Landed

To say that I'm stoked about this new Queens Of The Stone Age record would be putting it mildly.

This is shit, anything that guy does is shit. It's not a bad song, but it's not a good song. Tao of the Devil is 1000000 times better. Brant rules!! Josh, you are useless.

I don't know why the drums are so compressed, it sounds bad. The rest is fine I guess, kind of generic.

Yeh heard a leak of the album..meh...it's not great..and some of the lyrics are pretty silly. This track is actually one of the better ones, although I think the arrangement really spoils it..The downward spiral continues, though I'm sure they will get more popular.

I pulled on my hazmat suit and actually listened to it and I agree with this. I'm not very rawk and to an extent it all sounds the same to me (thump thump skewiddle OW...OW...OWWWW...more skewiddle...more skewiddle...more skewiddle...etc.) but it sounds like someone flipping through AM radio stations using the push button*. To be honest it's more an extended series of interminable 'insert guitar here' guitar solo's than a song but you could say the same about the dread likes of Sweet Child of Mine.

I'm not a fan but I've heard the odd song that was characterised by less rawking and a more fixated drive and I think it's a shame they aren't more man machine and monotonous (in a good way), since they at least have a singer that's mostly free of 'babarian spew'**. I could see them doing a sort of sun frazzled motorik if they went with the right producer.

D

*I see it's produced by Mark Ronson. That was pretty much his Amy Winehouse tactic...generic approximation.

**thanks Julian.

Hmmm...I don’t get the negative comments at all.

Granted, I fully admit I’m not much of a rawk! guy, but this is far from generic as I think this genre gets. It’s got actual parts (ie verse, chorus, bridge), it’s got real melody and harmony, plays with odd times, negative space, and doesn’t get over saturated or mired in your typical rawk! tropes, all while maintaining movement and energy.

Does it break new ground? No. But tell me who is these days. This sounds like a band that actually puts time and effort into writing songs, which will always be a plus for me.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

So like... their first two records then? They are still available for purchase and download. ;D I think they're a great band still making great music after 21 years. They don't need to reinvent the wheel every time out, but they bring some cool shit to the table.

The "generic" criticism is really something I don't understand, though. Who else sounds like these dudes?

A lot of my criticism comes from the production of the song, and I looked at another track that seems to be from the same album (the way you used to do) and had the same issue with it. I don't understand enough about the process to really give a good explanation of why I think it sounds this way, but it just sounds like it was produced to be very... I don't know, unobtrusive? The drums are really compressed and all of the guitars have this octave thing going on and sound like they're pushed into the background that just sort of blends together into one long stream of mush. "The evil has landed" is definitely better in that regard than the other song I listened to but like, if you asked me in a week to tell you which song was which I probably couldn't because they both sound so same-y. It's lacking dynamics.

In the rawk genre or in general?

I am not a fan of anything I have heard of Homme's, but this is actually not a bad song! Quite cool in places too when it changes up. I'm now solidly mildly interested.

It's just so mediocre with absolutely no soul or feeling. Yes, it has a verse and a chorus and gets a tad dangerous, but it's just so bland. I don't know why people give him a pass. It's just not interesting. It's a bit like Joe Bonamassa. Has all the talent, and chops, but just falls flat with no depth. Just my opinion.
