^ There's an extended set of these for Stereolab as well with similar variable results.

This lot appeared to me in a sidebar long ago and have just popped up again. I'm not 100% convinced by their songwriting, especially in that preamble section, but having named themselves after Daphne Oram blended with 'the Aura' they obviously wish to lay claim to the Radiphonic/Hauntology label. Maybe this is the retro-futurist equivalent of The Rolling Stones trying to do Blues and getting it wrong enough to inadvertently create something similar but different. You decide.

That's decent. I even looked up buying it but it's more than I'd pay for one song, it's a lathecut and they have a bit of dislaimer on their site which the likes of Polytechnic Youth and Static Caravan don't feel the need to put, so I worry I'd just be buying an epensive souvenir coaster.

I also watched some of the Influences link you posted. I covered a lot of that in the influence section of my post but that guy or girl really knows their stuff, very impressive.

How the hell did I forget Eccentronic Research Council? I really like the record and the political, feminist and charmingly parochial spin they put on the story of the Pendle witches. I really like Maxine Peake.

Another Witch is Dead - The Eccentronic Research Council ft Maxine Peake

1612 Underture - The Eccentronic Research Council short film

Eccentronic Research Council ft Maxine Peake 1612 Underture TV feature

Eccentronic Research Council - 1612 Underture Full album

For some reason the bandcamp appears to leave off one of the best tracks; The Ghost of Lizzy Southerns returns

Their other records are no bad but never up to this standard IMO

I just got an album by The Big Eyes Family Players (for £8.50 inluding post and the download) and it's certainly relevant in here (btw really depressing that they can't even sell 250 copies). They come from quite a folky place and have a wee bit of a Talk Talk/Barl Psychosis thing going on with them. Apex folk priestess Sharron Kraus* plays bass and sings backup with them. The singer is like cross between the singer in Esben and the Witch and Sandy Denny. There's a good cover of Lal Waterson's Song for Thirza but it's not got that marrow deep chill.

Incidentally Bright Phoebus is being reissued on Domino, it comes in two versions a single LP or a double with the demos. A must own record IMO.

The Big Eyes Family Players - Oh! has a pretty nice sleeve by noted textile designer, printmaker and occasional cushion provider to House of Shadowplay, Laura Slater.

D

I think that both of Sharron's more instrumental albums Pilgrim Chants & Pastoral Trails and it's sister record Night Mare fit in here on the more hauntological folk side. Certainly anyone who likes Tyneham House might like them.

Only 3 left when I purchased, so I snapped one up and I'll see what I think when it gets here.

If you don't know already you might want to check out Michael Tanner/Plinth (link in first page), who is also Tyneham House. Music for Smalls Lighthouse was also released on Clay Pipe and it's a beautiful and beautifully packaged elpee.

Digging the Pye Corner Audio stuff. Also turned a friend of mine on to it as it's directly up his alley.

One band I don't see mentioned much that seems to travel in similar orbits to Stereolab/Broadcast (albiet on the poppier side) is Komeda.

I did. Some good stuff in there that I liked, but a lot of filler too. I'm get impatient when there is too much drone tone. :shifty:

Totally forgot about Komeda. good shout.

Btw Sleep Games by Pye Corner Audio has just been reissued.

The guy that does PCA, Martin Jenkins is a busy boy, anyone looking for something with the odd guitar and a bit more BOC does dreamy psyche feel might like Stratus (probably named after this famously sampled track)

Fair enough, I like it as a piece, I bought the tee shirt for the whole family so we look like a cult when we're out running. I think all their records have been cracking.
