Julie London/Barney Kessel

Post by julius2790 » Sun May 21, 2017 1:22 pm

I've really been digging "Julie Is Her Name" again lately. I can't play anywhere near as good as the late Mr. Kessel but I've been trying to fuse his kind of jazz playing with sort of Link Wray-type major chord stuff. Jazz-based verses and big, nasty Link Wray choruses. I really want a thinline Jazzmaster so I can kind of get more in the territory of Kessel on the neck and then shift into something raunchier on the bridge for big chorus work. I love, love, love her voice. I also read that Iggy Pop was huge into her stuff, which I found interesting.

I, for one, would really like to hear that. Got clips?

I have 2-3 ideas that I'm working on building into full blown songs. Frankly the guitar parts are not as difficult for me as coming up with lyrics. I really, really, really struggle with lyrics. They don't have to be profound or anything, but they can't suck and they ideally need to look cool written down. And of course they have to work phonetically within the melody for the song.

If I can finish recording the full idea with the melody I'll post it. Maybe I'll just sing it without the lyrics. Would love to get feedback and suggestions. One idea is kind of a Kessell/Brian Wilson thing into a Link Wray-style chorus. I'll flesh out the idea and post it. I'm hoping to get my friend who is an incredible drummer to record some things but he has 3 projects he's juggling. Great drummers never seem to have a shortage of people wanting them!!

Thanks for the response!

'Julie Is Her Name' is one of my favourite albums. I always have it ready when I'm trying to woo a lady over drinks.

Not the highest success rate, but I'm thinking that's not Ms. London's fault...

I WISH I could work with a vocalist that talented. I'm hoping I can carry enough of a tune to make it work.

Next time, play it at twice the speed. Guaranteed to make your date laugh, & laughter is the best aphrodisiac.

Even I like Julie London, though I bought the records for their pinuptastic sleeves, I didn't know anything about her back then but I did like them when I ran a needle over them and I love her honeyed voice that often seems to be singing right into your ear.

Are you loathsome tonight?
