R.I.P Chris Cornell...
Sad news! Only 52 years old, still performing & he's left a wife & kids behind.
I know he's been mentioned in another thread but I'm putting this up as a shout out to a guy who was a major part of the music scene that changed my life.
While I wasn't as much a fan of Soundgarden as I was Mudhoney & Nirvana, there's no doubt his band were hugely influential. One of those early bands that bridged the gap between metal & indie rock, I doubt I'd have heard half the guitar bands of the early 90s if it hadn't been for Soundgarden & Sub Pop.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

A surprising one - and it's no age, really. I hadn't listened to them much in a long time, but like Porky Soundgarden were an influence/conduit for a lot of music in my formative years.

All of this is true for me, too. Just a freakish talent with that voice.NickD wrote:A surprising one - and it's no age, really. I hadn't listened to them much in a long time, but like Porky Soundgarden were an influence/conduit for a lot of music in my formative years.
Sad news reading this, to bookend an all-round terrible day in general.

Re: R.I.P Chris Cornell...
I've never been a fan of his but he certainly was a powerful singer, and always seemed like a good guy.
Fifty-two... that kind of creeps me out. I'll feel a little better once it's known what did it so I can rationalize it in some way.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Only two years older than me, that's a short innings and shame for his wife and kids. Never took to Soundgarden but I do like this contemplative cover of Black Hole Sun by Mimi Goese (best known as singer in the most wondrous Hugo Largo)...no one sings like you anymore.

I shared this on Facebook when I heard the news - his voice was something spectacular in full flow Beyond the Wheel (Live).

Re: R.I.P Chris Cornell...
I saw Soundgarden at an open air festival here in Jacksonville less than 3 weeks ago. I talked about it in another thread, but it was one of the few magical experiences I have had watching a band. Cornell sounded like he traveled back in time, and looked great. Anyone who saw the performance talked about how great he was. I'm in total shock, as I have been a fan since I saw them on a local cable access show around the Louder Than Love tour. They were Black Sabbath to me before I knew what Black Sabbath was, if that makes sense.wingnutkj wrote:I shared this on Facebook when I heard the news - his voice was something spectacular in full flow Beyond the Wheel (Live).
I'm sure it'll hit me later on and I'll be a mess. I just saw them and I've still been buzzing about finally seeing them. The performance is still very fresh in my mind, especially with them closing with Beyond the Wheel (straight up goosebumps). In a day and age when rockers are still going in their 70s, 52 is way too young. God dammit!
Being musicians, we have a lot of influences who make up our musical DNA. Those influences can become heroes, even gods. Anytime one of those heroes leave this world, it is always going to hurt on a level most people won't understand. We don't always get to meet or even see our influences/heroes/gods in the flesh, but they all have made a mark on who we are as artists. That running stream has now stopped.

Re: R.I.P Chris Cornell...
devastating, my favorite singer, seen him many times with Audioslave and solo.
his voice is THE rock voice in my head, and the way I always wanted to be able to sing....here, I tried.

Re: R.I.P Chris Cornell...
Totally devastating, especially because of his age and the fact that he's leaving behind a wife and kids. I listened to Soundgarden a lot growing. You bet I'll be listening to their albums today (LOUD) and in subsequent days.
Love what Shadowplay quoted above.
"...no one sings like you anymore."
RIP Chris Cornell.

Re: R.I.P Chris Cornell...
Definitely one of the greatest rock singers ever...such a great voice..although I admit it took me some time to appreciate that after the horror of seeing them live in the 80's Heard some crazy stories about soundgarden when a friend had Jason Corsaro working on his record! RIP.
