What are some bands that have an awesome Fuzz tone?

Big or small, local or well known, 60s or modern - it doesn't matter.

Who's got some ridiculously good fuzz?

I don't use fuzz often, but when I do, it's set to a Spaghetti Western flavor.

But when I was a young lad, I liked Mudhoney.

I have two fuzz pedals. One for the aforementioned Spaghetti sounds, and one for the freakout stuff.

The recordings that got me into fuzz were Pink Floyd live at Pompeii (si Fuzzface) and The Who Live at Leeds (Univox superfuzz).

Now, I have a rather shameful fuzz collection that doesn't get enough use BUT I WANT THEM :squint:

Blue Cheer - Just a little bit

My dad had the 7" and gave it to me when he heard me playing Mudhoney's Superfuzzbigmuff, figuring (correctly) that I'd like it. I don't knoiw what their guitarist used for his fuzztone, but it sounds pretty good. The aforementioned Mudhoney album has pretty good fuzztones too.

Otherwise, very early Led Zeppelin - especially How Many More Times is a Tele and Fuzzbox and a great tone (notably some of the live versions)

Ahhh cripes, were to begin, some of my favourites below. I sometimes worry I don't actually listen to music anymore for musical content, just FUZZ:

Dark - Round the Edges (the whole album is a complete fuzz fest)
Charlie & Esdor - Fuck the Cops (germanium squelch madness)
Beau - Silence Returns (wait for it)
Fuzz - Loose Sutures (I think Ty Segall has nailed the nasty 60s fuzz to a tee)
Reine Fiske - anything where he wails with Dungen (best guitarist EVER)
Sharon Tandy - Hold On (extreme freak out in pop song)

The Beau track is one of my favourite fuzz tones on record. I managed to speak to Trevor Midgley (Beau) about it, Jim Milne (of Tractor/Way We Live) said it was done in one take, on Jim's homemade Les Paul copy with humbuckers, through a Marshall Supafuzz into a little solid state practice amp. Incredible. Good for scaring passengers with.

Ty drums for Fuzz, Charles Moothart is on guitar. They both use DBA fuzzes into music man/silverface fenders though!

Actually, Wolf People have got some of my favourite fuzz tones, both live and on record ;D

This is true - don't want to inflate his ego too much though :P

Electric Wizard - Dunwich

Kyuss - Gardenia

Both drop-tuned, fuzzy madness. That whole album by Electric Wizard has a much more refined fuzz tone than their earlier work, which sounds more like this.

Josh Homme's tone on Welcome to Sky Valley (the album Gardenia is on) is my favourite on any of Kyuss or QOTSA's albums. So bassy, so thick. Mad. It's from back when he ran everything through Ampeg 8x10 cabs.

Dam, I did know that...slip of the mind there...

Haha thanks Bill, but not in the same league as those guys, bit more restrained and sludgy...in my head I want it to be more like Moothart, but cross polinated with Richard Thompson and Dark, but it comes out all weird and wrong. Is that the guy who uses a non-reverse Firebird too? I know the name but not by sight.

(most of the raspy and exciting fuzz tones are by Jack, the main chap, he uses a broken solid state mixing desk, its the best fuzz I've ever heard, but a bit unwieldy for live use)

Yep!

The first Fuzz album is some top-tier deconstruction of seemingly simple riffs. Great feel for melody.

I'm a big fan of Nothing's guitar tone. Dominic Palermo and Brandon Setta kill it. Plus, Brandon uses a Jazzmaster
