Long time fan of Mount Eerie/The Microphones/Phil Elverum, so this one is a bit hard to swallow for me. For anyone unfamiliar, Phil Elverum's wife died of cancer a while back and this album is his reaction to it. Honest, autobiographical lyrics have been taken to their logical extreme in the past few years (Sun Kil Moon's Benji is what I'm reminded of) but it always seems a little comical or lazy. But with this album, it's so honest it hurts. It's an album of pure grief and devastation, he sounds exhausted the whole album. Obviously it's been getting great reviews, critics love concepts like this. But the music, while very simple and quiet, is beautiful. It reminds me a bit of some of Bonnie Prince Billy's work, particularly I see a darkness. It's really not the best album to get into Phil's work, but fuck if it's not a unique album.

Re: A Crow Looked At Me
This is one of the most emotional albums I have ever listened to. It’s like this is me right now. Things aren’t very good but I’m trying my best.
