I was heavily into DM in high school and college. I so wanted to see the OMD/DM tour when they swung by around the time of "Music for the Masses", but was denied by the parents (still not over that). Weird to think this was less than a month before the 101 show, which has since become legendary.

Their albums of late haven't really blown me away either, aside from "Playing the Angel" which has grown on me over the years. Haven't really given Spirit a proper listen, but I'm holding out hope that it will surprise me.

Been a fan since the 80s (music for the masses) and I am one of the bring Alan back brigade... however I think this is their best album since Songs of faith and devotion.

Going backwards is a tremendous tune.

Is a great tune Dez. There's a couple of really good ones, 3-4 decent ones, and and 2-4 shit ones. I've never been bang into them, but the wife is a massive life long fan. And we were lucky enough to get tickets to the Barrowland too!

Should also say that I like it musically very much. Just some of the cringey lyrics that I think let it down.

Aye... the lyrics are a bit dodgy I think 'Wrong' was the last properly good lyric from Martin. Going backwards and where's the revolution are a strong opener, Scum and cover me are great love the 'on the run" esque sequenced synth at the end of cover me best DM do pink floyd since 'Clean'

Agreed. Even when I was 16 I felt his lyrics were a bit cringe worthy, and he seems to only rehash old themes:

-Stop Treating People Like Shit
-Some Political Something Or Another
-Beware If You Have Any Intention Of Falling For Me, I'm A Lone Wolf
-I'm Into Some Freaky Sex Shit
-I Like To Par-tayyy
-I Used To Par-tayyyy
-I Might Kill Myself After The Show

:D

I kid, I kid.

Sort of.

Btw anyone who likes early Mute stuff like Fad Gadget, classic minimal wave or Soft Cell, might want to have a look at Vorderhaus (formerly recorded as The Detox Twins) and artist on the absolutely top shelf Polytechnic Youth label.

Vorderhaus - Minor Activity

I was never a huge Depeche Mode fan but I thought they were OK. I think they are obviously a good band, just not really my thing having already been into electronic music when they came out but I really went off them as they became more rock shaped or at least more band shaped both in stage projection and musically. Speaking personally I think they were one of those groups that changed for the worst to fit in the US sports shed circuit (see exhibit 'A' The Cure).

I quite liked some Recoil but I think it sounded best remixed by Barry Adamson (Control Freak) andPanasonic (Shunt).

I liked some of what Alan was doing with Recoil, but kind of...ahem...recoiled at his heavy reliance of DM source material for his samples and loops early on. I didn't really understand that so much. And yeah, if memory serves me, Barry Adamson — quite the interesting artist in his own right — did nicely rework a few of those songs, making them much better IMO.

The fact that DM took Fad Gadget on the road during the Exciter tour was the best thing about that album... glad they gave me the opportunity to see Frank live.

yep. not my favorite album, but it does have some good songs. That was right before he died, right?

he didn't open on the US dates. DM has generally had some bad openers on the US tours. I remember The Bravery being an exceptional let down.
