Shoulda been a Bond Theme

Post by shadowplay » Tue Jan 17, 2017 7:16 am

A bit of fun this. I was talking with my wee brother at the weekend and he's big fan of James Bond films and not into music at all really but he was keen on me making him a playlist of stuff I thought might be Bond themes in another dimension where they aren't giving them to dullards.

So my starter for five (you can go play in or play out or even incidental);

Beyond the Wizard Sleeve - Black Crow

Violet Indiana - Killer Eyes maximum pout and diva flout

Apollo 440 Pain with Billy MacKenzie - Pain in Any Language

Goldfrapp - Utopia (Mick Harvey Remix)

Snow Ghosts - And the World Was Gone

And my submission for the hotly contested bikini snorkelling through a verdant coral reef category; Fire Damp and Air - The Advisory Circle. I'd put Jon Brooks up for the whole gig if I was king, he's got form.

What an awesome idea for a thread! I have all of the movies, and several of the books that were passed down to me by my grandmother after she passed, who was a huge fan as well. When I was younger there was a TV channel, Spike TV (a terrible channel for all purposes), that, during Christmas times, would play the movies, for the "007 Days of Christmas". Too many fond memories to be had watching those movies, sipping hot cocoa.

Anyway, looking forward to checking out your links, shadowplay.

The fact that Amy Winehouse died without giving us a Bond theme was a real tragedy. She would have KILLED it.

Amy Winehouse dead could still clobber Sam Smith twice as alive as he is.

That was the worst bond theme ever, by a wiiiiide margin.
This is an excellent rectangle

There have been a few times over the years that I've thought that certain songs could be Bond themes. I just need to try'n remember which ones they were.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Most of the Cocteau Twins later material could easily been a Bond theme.
The start of Violet Indiana - Killer Eyes had me ready for Elizabeth's amazing voice to come in.
Oh wait I've just read it features Robin Guthrie, no wonder.

Dead Can Dance - Carnival is over could have made a decent Bond theme.

Surely some Portishead track would fit the bill.

^^^

Black Sun might have worked as the up front theme.

I always thought Gun by Emiliana Torrini would have worked in the cinema and then I saw it playing over the end of an episode of Person of Interest. It's not main theme material but it's play over credits material.

What about Laetitia Sadier Release from the Centre of Your Heart?I've never seen the video and...it's like a bond intro.

I think East India Youth could have done a Bond theme, Carouselwas almost there as a more modern post Barry pastiche theme, it's certainly beautiful.

Ha! Black Crow was the first song to jump to mind when I saw the thread title but since that's been suggested already, I'll nominate:

Piero Piccioni - It's Possible

And for some reason I feel like this would suit one of those ~wacky~ Roger Moore era comedic chase scenes: Chico Hamilton - V-O

Can 007 have a wah-wah based gadget?

Edit: Oh and Charlotte Gainsbourg - Time of the Assassins as much for the song name and the W126 coupe int he video as anything

Great suggestions from all btw!

Really good suggestion in Charlotte. I was going to pick a Brigitte Fontaine song but it's not quite right in francais.

I think that Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell could have come up with a good Bond theme for one of the Craig films. Come On Over (Turn Me On) is probably the most overtly Bond-like thing they did, in terms of the orchestration and everything, but I'd have loved to hear them do something that had been specifically written as a Bond theme.

Can't imagine this dimension's PJ Harvey wanting to do a bond theme, but in an alternative universe Civil War Correspondent got remixed to be a bit more John Barry. Or possibly Will's Song was actually released, with slight lyric changes.

Each time Goldfrapp doesn't get asked to create the next bond theme, I feel like they should fire their head of music.

Almost anything off of Felt Mountain could at least make the soundtrack, but these are probably the best two contenders for opening credits:

Utopia

I don't find the modern epic belter songs all that interesting.

But all the Bond themes are more or less belters, so I just want to hear old interesting belters from Asia and Africa.

Love this thread idea though, so I'll just put some Lee Hazelwoodin here.
