Mystery Machine is probably the 4th or 5th biggest guitar playing influence on me
Randomly, Mystery Machine were very well thought of in my group of friends in Brisbane in the mid 90s.

Some incredibly forgettable track came on the radio the other day and I knew the singer's voice but just couldn't place it .. it turned out to be Metric, sadly.

Shit, I'd forgotten about Jale.

Thrush Hermit was pretty good and SuperFriendz too, but I saw Local Rabbits mentioned and feel they deserve more than a spot in a list. What a great band they were. I understand Ben Gunning's gone on to do more but I haven't heard any of it yet. I hadn't found out about local rabbits until this is it, here we go, so I'm sad I never got to see them live. What great stuff! Nobody quite sounds like they did, and that's pretty fucking cool.

NoMeansNo, anyone? I saw them open for themselves once as the Hanson Brothers. That was a good show. They kinda turn one Stompin' Tom song into a whole set, but it's just dumb fun so it works.

I loved Mystery Machine back in the day. Unfortunately they don’t really hold up anymore in my opinion.

Local Rabbits were so good live. I saw so many great Canadian bands over the years, they were consistently one of the best live bands of the bunch.

That doesn't surprise me at all. They were like the Steely Dan of Canadian indie bands.

Nomeansno is more "80s" to me (when I first got into them) but they were so so good for so long.
If we're going back a little bit:
Doughboys
Nils

Adding to the list:
Zumpano (!)

I was glad to see Big Wreck mentioned earlier.

Ian Thornley is criminally underrated/unnoticed in the rock guitar landscape. Big Wreck appears at first to be born of the "wall of sound" macho guitar schlock that I despise, but Ian's playing, singing, and writing are just so damn on-point that I get into it anyway.

I really do think he's the Canadian Chris Cornell in terms of vocal range and style, but he also does it while play one hell of a lead guitar. Have you ever seen him on slide? His technique is flawless.

Just a tremendous musician all around, and he's almost always perfect live.

I got to see Big Wreck at a festival a long time ago & indeed Ian is a top notch player. I had one of their cd’s (the one that most of their hits were from) but they never really did anything for me. I can appreciate their musicianship though.

Surprised to not see any mention of The Tragically Hip. Back in high school & after they seemed to the band the jocks & “cool” kids liked. I never really got into them either, even after seeing them live. Gordie did have moments of good writing.

I thought the original post stipulating "a ton of great Canadian bands that didn’t break the American market" was meant to exclude them, but perhaps not. I saw them in Brisbane in 1992 and was one of the few non-Canadians in the audience I think. We had Canadian cousins so used to get a few tips on the Canadian music scene which pre-internet seemed like far-off exotica to us in the sub-tropics.

I remember my sister being heavily into Blue Rodeo, on one tour she saw them in Brisbane and followed them down to the Gold Coast, where some ocker yobbo was yelling at them to play Guns & Roses. :fp:

Yeah, that and then 10-Speed were on fairly high rotation, good stuff.

They never caught on in the states because after they got a push down here with Road apples, which was even more awful than the title suggested, nobody wanted anything to do with them. I remember some critics loving it, but they were wrong, and even though they got better, we got sold the barenaked ladies instead.

I will alway be angry that Weezer got the label push that Sloan should have had, because Weezer is terrible and Sloan are giants among giants. And I still hate the hip, just because road apples is one of the worst things I've ever heard in my life, even worse than mortar strikes getting progressively closer to my position. Yeah.

I'd rather be killed instantly than listen to that album again.
