A question for Spacemen 3 fans about "That's Just Fine"...........
I'm having my weekly dose of Spacemen 3.
I got a couple of non-official albums from Oink a while ago. Forge Prescription (brilliant) & How The Blues Should've Turned Out (much rougher but good nonetheless).
It's great having alternate versions of songs, especially demo's. You get a feel for the evolution of the song.
Then it struck me. Has anyone got an alternate version of "Thats Just Fine" off Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To??
I don't even know if there is such a thing. Just a thought.

I have the 12" single of Take Me to the Other Side and it's the last track on there - that's the main studio version. Not sure if I've got it on cd somewhere as well, I'll have a look and if so I'll pm you tomorrow. There's a reissue with it on - Transparent Flashbacks, I think.
I've been absolutely desperate to get hold of a copy of How the Blues... for ages. Haven't been able to find it anywhere.
Looking through all my sp3 vinyl has just set my heart racing. I think tomorrow might be a bad day for the neighbours...

I checked this morning and I don't have the instrumental version of That's Just Fine on cd anywhere, only on vinyl. Looks like they've added it to end of the cd of Perfect Prescription, though - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Prescri ... 799&sr=8-1 along with the other B-side from Take me to the Other Side, Soul 1.
Both outstanding tracks. Take Me To The Other Side is such a great 12".

Yeah. The first time I came down to London - when I was 16 - I found an old second hand record shop & picked up about 10 records, all bands I'd heard a little but not much...
Mudhoney - You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face) 12"
Sonic Youth - Confusion Is Sex
Dinosaur - Dinosaur
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
I forget the rest....
It took me a while to get into the Spacemen 3 record as I was expecting more Sound Of Confusion type stuff, not a load of mellow tunes. Once I'd started smoking dope however that all changed.
Take Me To The Other Side was, and maybe still is, my stand-out favourite.
So, is the version of Thats Just Fine different to the demo on Taking Drugs.....?

Well it doesn't have the vocals, for a start, and the guitars seem more integrated, the sound is warmer, and the whole thing feels a lot tighter and more focused I think.
There's 30 seconds of it on Yahoo music - http://music.yahoo.com/ar-265487-downloads--Spacemen-3

Here you go.....

....I'll warn you in advance that this is a bit all over the place. From what I gather they used to go to their studio & have all-nighters where they'd drop acid (amongst other things) & record anything & everthing. This is the result.
....I've also included an old Brentford gig from '89 too - you may already have it. Its an interesting one as its just Sonic - I can't remember the story behind it but Jasons not there. Its a very stripped down gig but I kinda like it. Also with bootlegs I'd normally hate background noise (people chatting etc...) but it kinda works on this.

Absolutely fantastic, thanks loads for that. I love the demos and the rougher stuff, probably because it sounds so much more like my own playing
Like you I find it really interesting hearing the evolution of songs - Come Down Easy is a great one for this, with different versions recorded in and namechecking 1986 and '87. I love that.

On hearing the instrumental version - it took long enough to download!! - I think I prefer the one on Taking Drugs.....
It needs lyrics, even if they are a little vague & tripped out. That adds to it.
Especially when the guitar-picking starts getting really fast & shrill at the beginning of the second chorus....
Ah yeeaahhh....just take it a little higher!!! - I love that bit.

I know what you mean - I guess I've just got used to listening to it after Soul1 and having a completely instrumental B-side to Take Me To The Other Side. I should listen to Taking Drugs more.
That's the one. It was the 2nd B-side to Take Me To The Other Side. Ah, B-sides...those were the daysbubbles_horwitz wrote: i actually have the instrumental version of this song on a cd called "singles" which also has the best version of "walking with jesus" on it. all spacey and fuzzed-out.
