I went to see U2 at slane a couple of years ago (the one they made into the DVD) and it was really, really good. I'm not so much of a fan of them anymore, but you really can't beat their earlier stuff.

Managed to get 1 meter away from the front, in the "Ellipse", the space between the 2 arms that make up the front catwalks. As with any U2 show, they'll always be very good, but I felt there was just that special something missing. Bono's voice was in great form though, and I love Miss Sarajevo - it was the first song BP Falon (Irish DJ and ex New York-er) played on his DJ set the night of 9/11, which really hit home. I tried getting tix to that Slaine gig, but it was really difficult. I remember them not giving any notice when the 2nd Slaine show went on sale, and still managed to sell 70,000 tix in a few hours.
Edge seemed to have a different Strat for every song.

Bono annoys me beyond belief.  There is so much I think I like about U2's earlier material and I cant embrace it fully because I think he reaks with pretention.  I could go on for hours before I even got to the fact that the guitar player's name is "the Edge" and why that is just so so so wrong.  Haha.  Great guitar player though.

I tend to feel the same way though I feel it should be noted that unlike dozens of other ridiculously self-serious bands/frontmen/musicians, at least with U2 the songs are there.

unlike musicians like Bob Geldof?

;D

I don't like U2 nowadays though, they lost the last bit of my respect when they recorded 'One' with Mary J. Blige, after releasing a pretty weak album (have to admit I didn't listen to the full album, but at least the songs they chose as singles are weak, and they're supposed to be the best ones) and that ridiculous Live8 stuff that didn't have any consequences (though afterwards Bono said he was pretty happy for some reason, maybe they were selling more albums thanks to all the attention he got?).

The live shows these days seem more like vehicles for Bono's crusades (for better or worse). I have great respect for The Edge - he is promoting a charity giving instruments back to the poor folk who lost everything in Katrina last year. Edge's cause doesn't get a look in during the gigs. It must piss him off somewhat.
