Re: no idea which fuzz I need
I'll definitely look in to those. Thanks!
I think this is, at least one of, the fuzz tones I'm looking for. http://youtu.be/D8oBFIwB5rA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's actually a Jordan Bosstone, which is different from a Maestro but cool in its own right. The EHX includes solder pads on the PCB to add clipping diodes or change the input cap too.RuffiansFC wrote:take a look at the ehx satisfaction. it is basically a maestro fuzztone clone, which would fit well with the retro influenced stuff you do. they can found for stupid cheap used.

Which fuzz you need? One can never have too many fuzz pedals.

It doesn't actually sound like a lot of fuzz pedals were involved recording that track...:idk:BriansAWildDowner wrote:I'll definitely look in to those. Thanks!

But I'm sure there's plenty of fuzz peds out there that could mimmick that raspy starved lofi sound. Imo it wouldn't make a lot of sense to get your feet wet with a $200 boutique fuzz. So yeah, the EHX Satisfaction seems like a safe place to start, at least untill you get a better idea of what you want.
A Bosstone/Maestro FZ-1 clone that cheap should probably make a good addition to most vintage inspired boards.

Re: no idea which fuzz I need
I've got a Nocturne Seltzerado - it's a cool pedal but is a high pitched soda fuzz, I've got a Frantone Peachfuzz (which I like a lot). Frantone started reissuing those, so shouldn't be hard to find.
Nocturne makes a Cramps style fuzz called the Fuzz-Ray that's cool. You can never have enough fuzz pedals I guess. Fall down the well!

Twang, Reverb, and Echo - it's where it's AT!

Slightly left field option would be the EHX Germanium OD. Not quite a fuzz, but will do that raspy buzzy sound really well. I think the Germanium Big muff also could nail that kind of sound. Both can be had for dirt cheap and are pretty versatile from what I've used them for.

Basic Audio Scarab Deluxe is the fuzz that (mostly) ended my fuzz search.

Re: no idea which fuzz I need
Correct. Not a fuzz tone. The buzzy bit is done by an early analog synth called a Clavioline. It was used here by Joe Meek and also on "Telstar" and by John Lennon on "Baby You're a Rich Man."Mr T. wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2015 11:02 pmIt doesn't actually sound like a lot of fuzz pedals were involved recording that track...:idk:BriansAWildDowner wrote:I'll definitely look in to those. You can get something like that, the lo-fi buzz, from an Electra Distortion, an early single transistor fuzz, or an under biased fuzz like the Maestro. You can build your own for $25 or there are plenty of clones out there. Lovepedals Le Luis, Greer Ghetto Stomp, Emerson Em Drive, EQD Speaker Cranker, COT 50, and Joe Gore's Gross are all based off the Electra.
Modern fuzz with bias and input gain set low can too. Basic Audio has the Bye Bias, Zippy and Knight fuzz. Their Scarab Deluxe is a great fuzz but has too much sustain and gain for this even when under-biased.
For a good all rounder, check out the Basic Audio Spooky Tooth, lots of 60s tones in that one. It's like the Gnarly I mentioned earlier, but does more. The Gnarly is like an Electra/Maestro/Tonebender hybrid and the Spooky Tooth can do some Fuzz Rite and FY-2 tones along with the rest.

For versatility, you want an EHX Germanium4 Big Muff Pi. You can use it for everything from warm germanium overdrive to wooly Dirty Rat-style to Distortion and then Fuzz Face and Muff-ish style Fuzz. It also has bias controls so you can adjust the sound if it's too hot outside and a volt control if you want a dead battery sound.BriansAWildDowner wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2015 10:28 amAh, right. So I guess I play a combination of surf, alt country and garage rock. My amp is a Reverend Kingsnake which has a US mode (Fendery), a UK mode (Marshall/Vox-y) and a Lo-Fi mode (Supro-y) so it's pretty versatile, and my main guitars have lipstick tubes and filtertron style pickups.
If you want something even thicker with more extreme sounds (think Stooges), then you want a Fredric Super Unpleasant Companion It's both a Companion Fuzz and Super Fuzz in a Shin-Ei style chasse. The differences from the original are that there's no volume drop in the Companion mode, there's a little bit more gain available for both modes, and there's an internal trim pot that allows you to control the level of octave in the Super Fuzz more.
If you just want Muff and Wah sounds, get an EHX Deluxe Big Muff and an expression pedal.

Re: no idea which fuzz I need
For fuzz you can't beat the FUZZ sound of the original tonebender. I bought a Keeley Germanium Super Phat Mod too. Some nice proper BUZZ FUZZ.

and I got a Tonebender clone from company where I live made with exact same circuit and components:

gets that dead battery on/off fuzz so well. Love it!
