Building a new pedalboard
About a month ago, I sold my Pedaltrain 2 because I got tired of trying to tip-toe to the back row pedals as they were all the same height (essentially, I know the angle...) and because I couldn't stand how big the holes between the rows were (just wasted space). I came up with a design that I like taking into consideration a little extra room for another pedal or two. I used oak wood (I'm not gonna tour the world, though maybe the neighborhood and I wanted something that won't move around). The sides, back, front, and the front and right side of the upper tier will all get a medium dark american walnut stain, while everything else will get a black/ebony stain.
I have some sanding and then staining to do. The last picture is just a mockup, but it feels REALLY good so far. Really solid. It's hard to see, but under the top tier and behind the lower/front tier, my VL Pedalpower 2+ will be mounted (still need to drill the holes for the power cables for that). I'm also gonna install some panel-mount jacks on the left side for my cable from guitar and cable to the amp. I'm lefty so it'll be nice to have my cables all go to the left side of the board instead of laying across the back of it going towards the right. The pedals will all be mounted with the bike chain method!

i dig it. looks sturdy as hell. whats the weight?
What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Thanks! It is so far... Still got a little ways to go though. I'm not sure on weight. It's heavier than any guitar I own (though I only have Alder, Ash, and super light shit wood guitars). I'll weigh it when I get done just for the hell of it.

Re: Building a new pedalboard
I was going to make a joke about drilling for weight relief. But it might even be possible to do some of that and incorporate/utilize it in the design. It could look good (a little bit at least).
I guess it looks heavy. But maybe it's not as heavy as I'm thinking.

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Yeah this is looking ddaammmnn good, albeit heavy looking. I'm still waiting on hardware for my board build but I've been toying with the idea of putting pop-out wheels at one end and a handle at the other so it can be moved like one of those small luggage bags. I dread the idea of having to lift something like this.
If OSG has tort me anything...

It's definitely not as heavy as you're thinking. It's not a 1x6 of pine, and with pedals, I may regret it, but I wanted it to be heavy.rumfoord wrote:I was going to make a joke about drilling for weight relief. Thanks dude! I hadn't thought about the luggage wheels before. That's a really sick idea if you can pull it off... I'm not sure about handles or something like that. I might look into a bag for it, but I'm not sure yet. I don't have a band or anybody that I jam with, so I'm not expecting to travel with it much for sure, and when I do, my truck has 4 doors...soggy mittens wrote:Yeah this is looking ddaammmnn good, albeit heavy looking. Looks cool... Is it hard to reach those back pedals.

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Thanks! Exactly, especially since I'm a short guy to begin with. I don't have much leg length to reach that stuff. Between the tilted down angle of the whole pedal board and the top tier being just a little higher, this thing feels good. I gotta start sanding the crap out of it tomorrow. I'm dying to start staining it and mounting pedals...budda12ax7 wrote:Looks cool... Is it hard to reach those back pedals.

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Got some updates! Everything is FINALLY all screwed down. I lined up my pedals for the hell of it, and it feels GOOD (angle and reach and everything). Tomorrow I start sanding the crap out of it and if it all goes well enough (i.e., no holes need filling), I might be able to start staining it too! Here are some pictures of progress
I wanted to run my cables (power and signal) under the top tier and kinda screwed up what I originally had (1x3), so I redesigned it with WAY more access to the space underneath the top tier. I actually like the way it looks better.
Here's the bottom. That rectangular section in the middle with the 4 screws is for the power supply, so I can mess with it without having to disassemble the board.
With pedals on (just sitting, not secured; plus the volume is gonna go once I finish my homemade one) just for the hell of it and a "dry run".
The circuit path will go (guitar) > tuner > Analogman Sunface BC109 > Empty enclosure (will be my rehoused Boss Blues Driver) > Dingotone HZD Boost (unless I put this in the fx loop of the amp) > BYOC Tremolo (or rehoused Boss Tremolo) > VFE Tractor Beam Phaser > Volume pedal > Catalinbread Echorec > BYOC Ping Pong Delay/Echo > Red Panda Context Reverb > Looper > (amp)

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Dude, that looks great! It's a way more complex build than mine was. I can't think of how many ways I would have screwed that one up

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Thanks guys! It is pretty complex and I've had a remake a couple pieces here and there, but I wanted to make it last, you know? I'm very happy with it so far.
And if I get too many pedals, I could just build another similar board for distortions and modulation only and this one could be for delays only

Re: Building a new pedalboard
Update!
Pedalboard is all done on the assembly/fitting and sanding! I am almost done with the staining (edges Minwax English Chestnut, horizontal and underside pieces Ebony), so I should be able to hit it with the satin Polyurethane clear coat in the next day or two!! I'm really happy that I chose the Oak. Aside from being heavy as hell, it's SO pretty with the stains...

Ha! You're the first person who actually said something about them. It was a damn to do to them, but it's just the sheet. I still have the mattress cover and pillow cases which my girlfriend's daughter uses when they are oversoggy mittens wrote:dat ducktails quilt cover though!

Thanks!! I'm crazy excited to get this thin finished so I can start just playing. I got a shipment today from Redco of some right angle Neutrik jacks and Mogami cable that I'm gonna be building into some really nice cable to and from the pedalboard.
