Great minds think a like!  ;) Try setting his amp up really clean, then use the ultragain with the output set to unity gain, and whatever dirt pedal you've got. If you have to mic the amp to keep it clean, then mic the amp.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

I say these 2. Simply because the RAT is amazing and the RR is good for the price/sounds awesome.

forget a distortion pedal, get him one of those cheapass Behringer SansAmp knockoffs.  Itll sound a lot better straight into the PA at gigs, and will sound a lot better into his POS amp for practice.

A cheap ibanez soundtank delay is the best value going.

Do you guys get paid to play out?  and if so, why not take his money from him and put it towards a gear fund for him.

Nah, not any more. We're hobbyists nowadays, really. It's his responsibility to get good gear, but he's so strapped, it's kinda hard. I'm building a big fuckoff cab right now, though, so I'm going to bully him into going halves on a Tiny Terror with me. Add one of the above dists and a DD-5 off eBay, and he's done.

The added advantage to that is that the TT and cab will live with me  ;)

I'd recommend getting something from BYOC, they sell do-it-yourself pedals with exactly the same parts as some great vintage and boutique pedals, but for around $70+. Also, building your own pedal is lots of fun.  ;D
