Talk to me about the Earthquaker Devices White Light

Post by frippy » Fri Dec 04, 2009 10:05 am

According to their website write up, the Earthquaker Devices is, "in the area of vintage overdrives (like the DOD 250 or MXR Distortion+... and no, it's not a clone of anything)." Without knowing the guitar and amp for the clips on the website, they're a bit less than helpful IMO. I realize, of course, that it'd be very unlikely any pedal maker would use a JM and a HiWatt for their demos....

Thanks in advance!

I was checking this out as I was recently contemplating replacing the tubscreamer on my board....but honestly every time I've bought any kind of gain / fuzz / etc pedal without a tone knob I've been very unhappy, especially when stacking multiple gain stages....

I had one for a few weeks. It was good, but not quite what I was after. I play a JM with AVRI pickups and a Bassman. I was looking for an always on OD and had gone through quite a few pedals trying to find it. I tried tubescreamers, a Rat, DOD 250, Distortion + (which was fantastic at times - just not as an always on), DBA Interstellar Overdrive Supreme and a few others before settling on a Box of Rock.

I would say the White Light has vintage-like characteristics... but with a ton more volume.
Without knowing what you're after specifically, it's hard to say yes - it does that, you're good, or otherwise...
But it certainly wasn't bad - let me start there. And if I hadn't been looking for that "number 1", I probably would've kept it. But I found that the White Light just didn't have the character, sparkle or definition I was after. I found that my note playing got muddied up pretty quick. With my setup, I found it was almost kind of "soft" sounding and lacked the picking dynamics I was after...

I ended up selling it to Ian (fellow OSGer), who as it turns out, loves it for what he's using it for. He was after something much different than I was. After talking with him about what I was after, he suggested the BoR and was dead-on - so he definitely knows his stuff. He might be able to shed some light on what it's good for, as opposed to my describing what it's not good for. Hopefully, that'll help (but I haven't seen him on the boards in a while)...

Oh - it did stack beautifully - I'll say that. I remember being quite impressed with how good it sounded with my Rat. :)
Hope that helps in some small way.

It would be sitting between a JM and a Reeves Custom 12. Soft and muddy are not characteristics for which I am looking.

Let's bump an old one...

Anyone jamming this with a bass set up? How much more interesting is it than the 2013 DOD 250 (or not)?

I've never played a White Light, but if you like the DOD 250 sound, have you thought about looking into an EQD Gray Channel? It's supposed to be a 250, but it's got quite a bit of versatility it sounds like...

I kind of considered the Grey Channel but it's a bit spendy. If a cheaper one popped up locally I might give it a shot.

What got me on this (besides binging Sleep bootlegs on youtoob) was the DOD Xmas sale when the 250 was $45 but they wouldn't ship to Canada. Then I figured "Hey maybe a White Light for ~$100" but that seems to be a no go as well. So... I just grabbed the cheapest 250 reissue I could find to check it out...

Still keeping an eye out for the EQD though.

Really depends on what you’re looking for. I bought one a while back when I was playing post-punk through a twin with a Rick 620.

Way shrill, loud, not a ton of dynamics. Sounded very generic and uninspiring. Probably my least favorite OD pedal I’ve ever tried.

Then again, I’m a low-gain type dude, so I generally stick with EP preamp type stuff. YMMV.
