Good point on the chocolate flakes!  ;D
Up until July the deluxe Muff was the only fuzz/OD/disortion box I owned. I've never really been into OD/fuzz up until this year. For years I just used a Boss GE-7 as a booster to OD my amp.  I bought the Muff about 10 years ago basically for overdub purposes or when I felt like channeling the spirit of J. Mascis. The compressor circuit I've always found quite useful, especially for the Dano 12. Plus you can mix the comp. sound and fuzz sound individually. I've had a number of friends offer me two to three times ($75 in 1996) what I paid for it and never felt like parting with it. I probably use it more now than I ever have. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. It's a great pedal well worth owning if you ever run across one.

I had one of those for a while too. I had the master volume version and I also had Oliver put an AC jack in it. It was a really cool pedal. It was a fairly aggressive sound, but it was EQ'd really well. It cut through nicely, but it was still fat and not overly bright at all. I think the master volume control can be a bit misleading on it though. With most stuff, you could crank it and use it as more of a booster, but it doesn't work quite like that with the IOD. The gain knob is more of a saturation control and the volume works best to even out the volume when adding in more gain. I really liked it and kind of wish I still had it sometimes.

it's my fave pedal ever...my old one was yellow and was stolen, and I had to buy another one.

it's sparkly, juicy and most importantly, you can hear the string-to-string separation....which is godsend for me, because of all the open string chords I play

it makes guitars sound huge....using it with a bright setup can make things too trebly though....

it cuts through like a knife in a band situation as well, which is another great thing about it...it is a band pedal really...in a livingroom, with an amp on 1-2 it's pretty unspectacular (unless playing it through a Zvex Nano!!)...but turn everything up and it is rather amazing.

the way I play with it nowadays is, get the amp to a nice level, boost it further with the 1st non-master channel, and for choruses/lead parts, I hit both switches at the same time...that switches off the first one, and instantly brings up the second channel, which I have maxed gain on (but I keep things sane with the master volume)

now...If I wanna go to 11....well, I can add the first channel to the second...with an amp cooking the sustain can be unbelievable....

going through the AD900, which has high headroom due to the 12V it uses, it sounds rather amazing...I cannot wait to get my Tremolux up and running so I can hear the chain in use

Jazzmaster > SD2IN1 > AD900 > Tremolux

should be amazing :)

I'll definitely be looking into a Super Duper now. Thanks for the breakdown...

it's a pleasure to help....it's one of my fave pedals ever, but do remember...try it with a cooking amp, and it does add presence.

My photo is kinda big so rather than posting it directly, here's a link.  I'm between pedal boards right now, because I'm not actually in any band.  A new board consisting of some of these pedals and maybe some that aren't pictured (my Big Muff, Black Finger and Moog Three-Band Paremetric EQ) will take shape when I start up a new project.

P.S.  If this link ever goes dead and you wanna see my pedals, please let me know.

So .. I guess you like Arion delays then?

I'd like to hear how you use the Black Finger (I take it we're talking the EHX valve compressor). I've got one and can't really make it work for me as a compressor, perhaps because I've never been able to use compression properly. It's something I've struggled with for years, and eventually I thought: I'll get a good compressor (thus the Black Finger) and if I still can't make myself sound better, then maybe it's just that me and compressors are never going to be friends. We're not friends yet ..

:(

However, if you take the Black Finger and boost the pregain over the compression (IIRC) - then it is one of the best sounding dirty messed-up overdrives I've ever heard.

Yeah, the Black Finger definitely overdrives well.  I use it that way sometimes, but usually I'm kind of a compression freak.  If I'm using one at all (which isn't all the time) I make it squish my sound a lot, so the Black Finger is fantastic for me because it has the "Squish" mode.  I leave that on and just never take it off.  It smooths everything out and there's no *POP* from the attack when I hit the strings.

And I like delay pedals period.  I've had up to five different delays on my board, so the Arions are great because they're cheap and I can afford to use lots of them.  I don't like tweaking knob settings between songs, so I just set each pedal for a different delay and turn them off and on with my feet.  It lets me rock out more.

I used the Black Finger on my Bass VI in a pop band I was playing in last year. It did a lot to smooth out the attach and create a little sustain.

I'm thinking about getting one for myself... I'm interested in the Demeter Compulator... anyone tried it?

here's my current setup:

http://public.fotki.com/sauerkraut/gear ... n_079.html

from right to left: DOD 280 compressor->EH small stone->Boss OD-3->Rat->Akai Headrush E1

I'm thinking about buying another distortion/fuzz pedal; maybe another Rat, another delay pedal; something with a lot of options (like reverse) and a Digitech Whammy (reissue, can't afford the original). And some sort of envelope filter would be nice. And maybe something outrageous by z.vex. And a pedal that plays the guitar for me so I can mess around with all the other pedals while it's playing.

some settings of the Zvex Fuzz Factory do that :)

One thing I was playing around with a while ago was to put the guitar down flat on the ground and rest an ebow on the strings, then adjust all the effects after that.

You can get some great drone-type sounds running through a tremolo into an envelope filter like that.

I like to forget about the guitar altogether sometimes, just plug the amp back into the amp via the pedals (amp->effects->amp) and make some insane noises by turning knobs. It's a lot of fun with the loop function of the headrush.

I've used the Dl-4 and some of the old DOD pedals (the PDS20/20 and 1000) for that. I just make loops of drones or pure noise and run that into all of the other pedals. Ideally, a looper at the beginning of the signal chain and one at the end would give me all the options I could use in that sense. I'm kind of tired of having 4,000 pedals set up though, so I slimmed my rig down some for now. I guess slim is a relative term seeing as how I still have 10 or so pedals in use right now  ???
