Sparklehorse noises

Post by ChrisFFTA » Sun May 10, 2020 11:25 pm

At the beginning of this track is quite possibly my favourite of Linkous’ weird noises

Any ideas what it might be?

I'm a big fan of Sparklehorse too, I'm also interested on the subject, but I can't really help.
I know he had a mellotron, could it be involved here?

I remember reading a detailed article on his recording and noise techniques a few years ago, I'll see if I can find it again.

I'm a big Sparklehorse fan as well.
I'm guessing Ocean Harp.

Massive fan here also. Don't know the answer to your question, but I watched a great doco about him which showed him "scratching"on a reel-to-reel tape recorder which he said was not in great shape that he'd recorded a guitar part onto. He talked about his love of having his own studio and being free to experiment.
Thanks for bringing this up, it's got me listening to the album again. :-*

Steve Drozd owns his Casio Sk-1, I know that.

As for the opening sounds, almost sounds like a self oscillating (like when you run the pedal into itself) flanger.

He often has a violin, so to me it sounds like a 'harmonic slide' you can do on bowed instruments. Much like fretting lightly for harmonics on guitar, but the ability to slide down using the bow, doesn't bend the note just plays each harmonic in a strange sequence.
But through a flanger.

Beats me, but man, I love Good Morning Spider.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

One of the best... There is so much going on in his records. Simple yet not that simple noisy but soft sad and luminous dirty and pure and the voice and the drums and ok I stop!

I can totally hear that.
