Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is my favourite wah I ever owned. Pricey, but solid and sounds great.

I had a Hendrix Wah for awhile that was kind of fun. I'm not really into them for guitar solos, but I think for atmospheric stuff it can be really cool. I love how The La's used it on this bit especially. Adds some interesting ear candy behind the song without screaming that it's a wah.

When I was 14 or 15 I bought a Wah because of Jimi and all the Funk I was listening to.
I loved the rhythmic phrasing.
But later I used it on almost every solo I played. That bored me quickly! :D
What else bored me was their sound sucking.
I had a Cry Baby, a Ibanez Weeping Demon, a Vox Tonelab LE (which had a really cool Wah), that Digitech Hendrix pedal that had probably the best Wah sound ever - but was really shitty to activate and deactivate (it needed pressure on the middle, not on the toe-end - and therefore was inaccurate to handle), later I bought the first JH-1 from Dunlop - nicer, lower peak than the normal cry baby - but again sucking tone.
I guess there are mods or ways how to treat it right but I couldn‘t.
I banned wahs from my pedal board for two years now - but last year when we supported SLIFT for two shows I think I reconsidered how I think about them... Their guitarist is using it more as a filter and he mostly even deactivates it for soloing! Great style. Great Band! Have a listen: https://youtu.be/m6o5xTp6s_Y
Also his minimalistic setup is nice! Fuzz War, Wah, Tuner and a Boss Modulation Delay into a Fender Showman Dual Reverb.

I agree. Kind of regret I sold it, had a great buffer too.

I personally have always hated wah and it is easily my least favorite effect. I do not own one nor do I want one.

:D

Ring mods can suck it. Except for when they're useful. Same goes for wah and flanger. :shifty:

.

A wah is part of the basic pedal board package. Eventually you'll have one. The little known use is to cock it part way and leave it. No fluttering or anything as another tone option.

I have one guitar I hard wired in a basic fixed wah to the bridge pickup -- "it cuts through the mix" a whole lot better now. Or just use a wah pedal.

It's in the way that you use it.

Back when I decided to get right into electric guitar and buy some gear, one of the 5 pedals I started with was a wah. Yes you can make awful sounds with it. You can also get very useful sounds that are not obnoxious.

So don't you ever abuse it.

The "Bonamassa-Mascis scale" still cracks me up every time this post gets bumped.

I vote that we make it a permanent rating scale on OSG. It could even be shortened to "Bonamascis" :D
