Fuzz pedal SHOW OFF thread

OK so i'm sick and bored at home, i'll just be showing off some stuff that i've accumulated over the years. I'll have to stay indoors tomorrow, too, so maybe i'll even end up doing some demos? lemme know what interests you (to see/hear).

Fuzz pedals (now without wah)



again, the japanese are in the upper row. i guess the're the oldest ones, too.
- Sekova, missing the bottom plate. Such a simple looking circuit, but very powerful sounding!
- Monacor Fuzzder. Also known under many other brands - this one is the coolest, cuz it has the Fender-ripoff logo! This one actually runs off a normal AA 1.5v battery! Apparently Billy from ZZ Top uses one of these, too!
- Ace Tone Fuzz Master. Well here we go with the 2-fuzz-in-one frenzy. Ace Tone later became Roland, they say.
(NOT SHOWN, because still in Mexico at my brother's: Honey Special Fuzz. Honey later became Shin-Ei, so this is a very early thing - i've read that it even is a precursor of the UniFuzz. 2 fuzz modes and some sorta phasing effect optional. I've had TWO of these rare birds before, but they were not working. Even so, they were sold on ebay for HUGE amounts of $$$) - stay tuned!
-Ibanez Standard Fuzz, with the cool sliders! Finally got this when i already had 3 Wau Fuzz pedals (see other thread...). EVIL PURE EVIL!

middle row:
- late 70s? Top Gear Fuzz Sustain, UK. i guess this was made/built by Colorsound or so? pretty rare they are, but i find the fuzz itself to be less impressive or "alive" than the japanese (which are very "hairy") or smooth like the Big Muffs).
- mid/late 60s VOX Tone Bende, UK. ugh, there's a tonebender RELIGION out there - i don't even know what version this one is. but it sounds pretty good.

then, the Big Muffs:
- v3, v4, v5

bottom row:
- Reuss Evil Twin pedal, which has a cool MXR Blue Box fuzz octave in it. i did a very extensive demo of that one once.
- Sovtek Big Muff...
- Big Muff v6 and Deluxe Big Muff w/Sustainer

Where are people hosting photos these days? I haven't posted anything since photobucket took a shit on the internet.

I have a few vintage 70s fuzz. An opAmp Big Muff, a Jumbo Tonebender and a Roland BeeBaa. The rest are recent. A Fairfield Four Eyes, Solasound Tonebender Mk-4 from DAM, and Basic Audio Scarab Deluxe, Gnarly and Marq Won are 3 Tonebender style fuzz. The Lovetone Ring Stinger does octave fuzz, but it's not a simple fuzzbox.

I went to imgur and it seems more reliable than Photobucket ever was. The Android mobile client is pretty infuriating to me, only seems to want to let you interact w/ it as a social site, but the desktop interface works well for me.

I actually went back to Photobucket.

I used to host everything on my website's server, but after two hacks in a year I got tired of the security issues.

Photobucket actually has some pretty reasonable image hosting plans, so I actually spend less on the image hosting than I used to.

Also, I think they have turned all the images they took down back on...it's just that they have a Photobucket watermark.

Did Honey/Shin-Ei become Electra? If you search on youtube for Psychedelic Machine you find this:



Only the brand will say 'Honey' as opposed to Elektra. That's my fuzz, but I can't say the fuzz is nice in terms of dimensional harmonics. It's got a decent vintage feel, but not so musical compared to so many others, like Fuzz Mutant or Big Cheese.

Stupid question: we are not including overdrives, right?

I've also read it was the early version of Unifuzz.

I've long lusted after one of those Psychedelic Machines, more a stand-alone unit than a pedal (although maybe it has a footswitch?). The one I almost bid on many moons ago was a Companion-branded model, eventually selling for something like £900! It was mint but still....

I'd be interested to hear more of your opinion on the range of sounds you can get. From what I've heard it seems like a very different beast to my Vox Ultrasonic (another multi-effects unit that's all built-in to the guitar), what with that pre-UniVibe phase-shifting setting it has built in.
I bought an Eko Multitone years ago that seemed to have the same Ultrasonic circuit but actually sounded pretty bad in comparison. The fuzz on the Vox (a silicon Tonebender) is incredible.

I haven’t tried one but there is a modern pedal that falls into this category. I think by Keeley? It’s called the Darkside or something Pink Floyd related because it’s Gilmour’s Pink Floyd setup in pedal form, fuzz, Univibe and echo. I think it’s a silicon Fuzz Face, but it might be a Big Muff for the fuzz? No, there is a booster too, if I remember correctly, so Fuzz Face, then Univibe/rotating speaker effect and an Echorec style delay.

It doesn’t sound exactly like the Psychedelic Machine, but similar, and certainly cheaper and easier to use.

Edit: the Keeley website says it is called The Dark Side, and the fuzz is a modded OpAmp Big Muff, there is no boost. I also thought all 3 effects could be used in serial, but it appears you have to choose between echo and modulation, but there are 4 modulation choices, phase, flange, Leslie and Univibe, not just the one, and the Echorec style delays have 12 settings. A review mentioned the delays sound more like a real Echorec than the recent unit from Strymon, which is how I heard about it.

This is pretty much what I've settled on after much experimenting and trading. Not all of these are marketed as fuzz pedals, but they are all capable of the kind of harsh, square wave clipping that moves them into fuzz territory:
