NPD - 90s multi fx

Post by dezb1 » Fri Nov 02, 2018 2:01 pm

Well this arrived today - and after half an hour of cleaning the most horrific layer of dust I've ever purchased - it's in pretty much mint condition - full working order and reset to factory settings as the patches the previous owner made are a bit crap, he was obviously trying to make sound alike patches. I'm hoping that it has a character of its own (the glitchy digital type) because is sounds bugger all like the stuff it was meant to emulate... Got to be worth £10

I had one of those back in the day. Horrible, horrible little thing. Maybe you can get it to sound ironically-bad instead of bad-bad, though?

The drive tones are genuinely offensive.

Haven't had much of a chance to mess with it, the step effect is quite fun n glitchy - and the Fuzz sounds like NIN of old.

Yeah, the step filter was one of the few redeemable effects on it.

The fuzz is definitely...brash.

Since you mentioned NIN, you might be interested to know that the DOD Tec4x, which was a contemporary of the zoom 505, has an effect called the Pixellator, which is basically just a bitcrusher, that was designed together with NIN's guitarist at the time. It also has the DOD Grunge dirt pedal built into it, or a digital facsimile of one.

I remember the Dod - didn't like it at the time and the grunge pedal was shockingly bad.

It's noisy, but some of the effects are useful, it's not a bad little lo-fi utility to have around. The hall reverb in particular is usable, sometimes even quite nice on the longest/deepest setting. Hi gain stuff sounds pants, but you can kind of get some useful stuff out of the Rhythm setting if you get the gain structure right. Expression pedal is essential for the pitch/wah stuff (again not up to modern standards but that's not what these things are fore any more). £10 well spent.

Interesting. I had the 506, the version for bass. I'm sure it's very similar to what the 505 is for guitar, there were a couple of interesting effects/sounds, but I think that most of it was mostly over the top, badly done digital patches that were basically unusable for normal play. Some things just don't mix that well with bass anyway, but it can be interesting. I think I played some Primus with some of its really out there settings. I didn't use it long, but I think it did get me started to move along into buying real pedals.

I haven't thought about that thing in a long time. I don't even know what happened to it, if I have it stashed away somewhere or if I sold it. I'll have to look for it one day out of curiosity.

It's a boost booster, to boost your boost - it makes your tone much muchier.

Been messing about with it, while the kids have gone to bed at night. Tele > 505 > headphones the mod effects are fine not a bad practice tool.

I’ve always thought it would be fun to have something like that for messing around with ambient sounds.

Not a bad idea, I might try to program some textural ambient sounds later.

I think I had that exact one when I was scaling down in the late 90s (one of the side effects of moving into an apartment). I don't remember much about it, except that the Ring Mod was pretty fun to play around with.

Think that would have been the 505 ii - this one doesn't have a ring mod.

I had the Delay version of this. It was noisy but very programable.
