Interesting. I just picked up a Dwarfcraft Baby Thunder off of Blankfield, and as much as it's not going anywhere, I'd love to have a more subtle option for bass as well. Thanks dude!fuzzjunkie wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 8:30 amBack in the 90s I would say that a lot of “FurzBasz” was created with a Rat. Occasionally a Boss HM-2 or a Sovtek Big Muff, but yeah, mostly it was a Rat.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 8:09 pmAnyone ever try a Rat with bass? I heard a Coldplay song from the first album the other day (Sparks maybe) and thought that Guy's bass sounded incredible. I looked it up and I think he used a Rat on the first album, but I've never tried a real Rat before, and not on bass either.

Re: Which Rat....?????
Yeah, I know that Kim Gordon used one in Sonic Youth and Novoselic had one in Nirvana. The bassist for Tool is a well known Rat user. Lots of indie bands, if the bassist had a pedal, it was a Rat, and maybe a Boss Flanger.
They sound good live through a big amp, but recording with one you will loose some low end, so the best way around that is to split the signal so you can blend in some clean, undistorted bass.
I’ll include this video because I had two friends that ran this exact rig back then. Jazz bass, Rat, Ampeg SVT.

Marc set his as in the video at 2:25, I don’t remember how Kim set hers, but I think she dimed it

Re: Which Rat....?????
I'm tempted to look for one (or build a clone myself) with a clean blend for that reason exactly.
Fuzzjunkie, that rig (Jazz bass, RAT, SVT) is epic!!
This is probably some kind of sacrilege on OSG, but I've never listened to Sonic Youth Nothing against them or anything, just don't have any friends who do where I would've heard something from, and don't know any of their songs.

Re: Which Rat....?????
I know its blasphemy but I have a Biyang DS-8 Mouse pedal that is the identical circuit to the Rat. (I opened it up to verify chip, resistor values, and such.) These have a 3 way toggle for germanium/LED/none on the clipping already in the circuit.
For modding purposes, this would be the way to go --much better enclosure than the vintage plastic ones, smoother pots than the two real Rats I've owned and cost much less used on reverb.

Re: Which Rat....?????
I recorded a track of Rat and a dry track the last time I recorded bass. Not sure how much Rat ended up in the final mix, but if you have a Boss tuner that’s a super easy way to do a split for recording. I’ve tried this with more of a straight up fuzz too, but it was less effective as the two sounds didn’t blend very smoothly.
I’ll probably do a similar thing next time I track guitar so I can do a dry track straight to the interface for reamping or running through a different flavor amp sim to blend with the miced amp.

Re: Which Rat....?????
You being the total gear slut over the years I'm a little surprised too. Seems like you would have picked one up in the wilds of Mexico.
There is a reason that people still play certain pedals and brands decades after they were first created, and Rats are in the pantheon of useful versatile pedals that can make just about any guitar/amp combo sound good (assuming you like its general vibe).
