A digitech bad monkey may work for you replacing the sd1. Its a bit milder and not quite as harsh.

for the overdrive, you might try some sort of Colorsound Overdriver thing. Awesome circuit that works with clean amps or dirty amps, and as a boost, overdrive, and even sort of a fuzz. Anything from a Blues Driver to a Vintage FX Colordrive. I'm using the Basic Audio Futureman right now. Great stuff.
