Looking for recommendations Fender's Vibrato Channel style trem pedal

Post by MayTheFuzzBeWithYou » Tue Aug 28, 2018 6:21 am

Hey there you fine people of OSG. Are you having a good day?

As some of you know I bought myself a 1968 Dripedge Bandmaster (non reverb) head almost a year ago now. For now it's my "at home" and backup amp. Sometimes I even use it with bass (no worries, there's a 2x15 bassman cabinet attached to it). In fact I really love that amp! :)
Really good pedal-omnivore and wonderful clean sound too!
Most of the time I'm using the "normal" channel - but from time to time I'm getting a little crazy and curious and plugging my guitar into the "vibrato" channel and here is where my questions start:

Can you please recommend me some trem-pedals or diy-kits that come close to that sound and controllability? Meaning two knobs maximum. Speed and intensity.

I had the big box pulsar and its successor the stereo pulsar and most recently I tried out the rotosound "the wobbler" in a music store - even though I kinda dig those big boxes, the pedal was more meeehhh than wow... and none of them was anyhow close to my Bandmaster's vibrato sound!
It does that 60s Garage sound (with added Fuzz of course) really well! I tried to get somehow close to it with the pulsar really long, tried to dial in those exact sounds (both speed and intensity between 6 and 7) but it always sounded somehow artificial, too little or too much but never to my liking.

Has anyone built the surfyindustries surfy trem (pcb diy kit for about 50 bucks) or tried the pedal?
It's capable of brownface and blackface vibrato/trem sounds (mini toggle) and only has those same two knobs (speed and intensity) - sounds decent in the videos.

But as I said I'm open for recommendations! :)

I like the BBE Tremor, especially for copying the Fender optocoupler sound, but I have two amps with nice tremolo effects built in so it's kind of redundant now. It has two speed controls that you can switch between, which is really cool, kind of like going between fast/slow on a leslie speaker.

The Mojo Hand Bayou tremolo is supposed to "faithfully reproduce the classic amp-style tremolo of days past". Demo here.

I had the previous incarnation (Sugar Baby), which had an internal trim pot for volume cut/boost. I think the main difference with this one is they've externatilised it with a full-size pot and extra knob. If you're dead against the extra knob, maybe try to find a used Sugar Baby. Demo here. Mine had a plainer CAR finish, for the record; the one in the video is a later edition.

Super pleased with the Strymon Flint for amp style trem (and the reverbs are killer too).

Hey!
Thanks for your responses.
After my first round of research I must say that both Mojo Hand Fx and BBE are rather hard to find here in Europe. Both used and new! :derp:
(Oh man, I wanted a Mojo Hand Colossos Fuzz so badly some years ago... just 'cause of Andy Martin and his video for Proguitarshop.com)

The Flint would be widly available and sounds and looks great. Also love the double feature with the Reverb! But I'm honestly looking for a cheaper solution!

Any experiences with the Surfy Industries Surfy Trem?

There’s a big thread about this on SG101. It might have some good info in it:

I'm here in the UK with a BBE Tremor and I've seen more than a few come and go on eBay/reverb/forums/etc.

Thanks DeathJag!

I've been studying this forum too for some time. For 15" speaker recommendations and funnily the Surfy Bear Reverb...
How could I have forgotten to check that site?! :fp:
...well I guess because osg is still my first choice for...eeehmmm everything!

Then I'm just unlucky to be here in Austria...pedalwise...but even on ebay kleinanzeigen I had no luck finding one. Next will be fb-groups.

Maybe one of these would be easier to find out your way? I totally love mine.

The SB Reverb is incredible!!!! It gave me the gift of The Drip, for which I will never stop being thankful for.

Surfy Bear set up a distro here in the US but I think its home is in Europe? If you want that pedal it might be easy and not that much? I use the Fulltone SupaTrem 2 and it’s pretty dang versatile.

Yeah, they're based in Sweden. So shipping shouldn't be much of a problem.
I'm also tempted by the surfy bear, but I guess I'm waiting for the V.2 of the DIY Kit...if it may ever come!? Bun honestly...Reverb-wise I'm fine for now...with the Boss FRV-1 and my good old EHX Cathedral.

I'm well aware that only a real spring reverb is a real spring reverb and THE DRIP is surely tempting. :?
G...got to r....resist GAS!

But even if I love big stomp boxes. That one is too big for me! and I don't know where else to put the spring tank. Maybe I'm getting both DIY-Kits and 'll build myself a new fx case - or even better a multi fx board with all the DIY kits I built... :shifty:
for now I've got a FuzzRite, a Treble Booster, a Blue Delay... another pedal workshop takes place in about a month... + surfy trem&bear. Hmmm. let's put that on my list of crazy plans!

Fulltone Supa Trem (old 1st version), easy to find 2nd hand and more versatile than any Amp Trem . It sounds awesome.

I had a black cat mini trem and it was almost indistinguishable from my super reverb's trem, with the same controls.
