Which Big Muff for an AC15

Post by zenarcade » Fri Jul 13, 2018 12:37 am

I would like to get a big muff for my Vox AC15 (the one with the greenback). i really like the Sound of the new Op-amp Big Muff but wonder how it will work with the AC15 as it is extremely picky with pedals. Did anyone try the Op-amp or any Bigmuff with a Vox?

I heard the normal channel is fine with pedals?

I use a Russian Big Muff into an AC10, which only has the top boost circuit. It has less fizz and more body compared to my Little Big Muff, but to be honest if I'm not pushing the amp into breakup they're all perfectly fine.

If the amp's in distortion and I'm on my neck pickup it does tend to flub out the bass, but that can be tamed somewhat too.

I have an Op-Amp muff from the 70s, and my AC-30 has greenbacks, but the Big Muff is not my favorite fuzz pedal for a Vox. Which is ironic because the sound that made me buy a fuzz in the first place was the Edge using one on Joshua Tree. I don't know what model muff he has, but I doubt it's an op-amp and now I think he was running it through his Randall amp and not the Vox.

He also uses a Big Cheese which I think is muff based.

Normal channel is definitely the key here. I originally heard this tidbit on an episode of That Pedal Show they recently did about the AC15. I'd have an AC30CC in the past and had gigged through backline ones before and had always struggled with the Top Boost channel, naturally assuming that Voxes just weren't for me. As soon as I watched the episode in question and heard the samples, I realized this wasn't so. Next backline gig we did I used a friend's AC15 and used my OCD through the normal channel. Presto. Much better.

Had the AC-15 a couple of years ago and can't remember which muff I tried with it (probably a Ram Head Clone) but I wasn't thrilled with what ever I used. I didn't hold on to the amp very long because of how it sounded with pedals and general lack of headroom. Probably could have experimented more with the normal channel.

Anyway I'd advocate the EHX Green Russian reissue since it has more bottom end than most of the Sub $150.00 Muffs out there. It's quite nice and aside from my Vintage V3 I've pretty much given up chasing other boutiques and such.

If you are a knob twiddler the Deluxe Big Muff might be an option because it has a huge tonal range.

I've had okay luck with a Hoof and my AC15HW through the normal channel (and with the master defeated). In general, I haven't been able to make big muffs work great with that amp though. I borrowed the EHX Op-amp one briefly and did not like it at all, sounded very thin with my AC15 and kind of buzzy (but, I don't have a ton of op-amp muff experience).

If you're looking for a fuzz with the AC15, I've had better luck with tonebenders. Still, never been able to get that sound of a big muff into a good high headroom amp though.
