NPD: Vintage MXR Flanger 1978

Post by BlixaFan » Sat May 12, 2018 6:54 am

soooooo i did something bad and found an original 1978 MXR Flanger for a steal of a deal while on vacation in Mexico. So i did what any pedal head would do and I bought it :D this should satisfy the Van Halen 80s Floyd Rose kick i've been on for the past few months. and now i have a cool souvenir from Mexico too :w00t:
more pics to come! I like how it's a little beat up at this point, i think it adds a little charm. and most importantly it's the same one Eddie used for all those flanger sounds. :P

A really great flanger.

John McGeogh had one on a stand.

Robert Smith used one of these as well before he went all Boss for his live rig. I've had a couple early ones (they have the thin 'lamp cord' cables). They are the best.

if i'm not mistaken Robert Smith used John's! i'm really excited to receive it. it'll be my first vintage pedal (i don't think my small stone is considered vintage, though it is the old ehx big box and i've had it for at least 13 years), and i'll definitely have to run my Bass VI through it and play some Cure riffs :D

So awesome. Always wanted one.

What were they thinking with the jack placement though? :fp:

i've always been sort of on the fence for flangers. sometimes i love them, and sometimes i can't find a single flanger sound i like. i think it comes down to moderation haha :D the jack placement is less than ideal but i actually think it'll work on my board because i'll have to put it in sideways. i'll find a way! and then flanger and floyd rose dives all the way to 1984 :D :D

Flanger on guitars and bass? NOPE.

Flanger on drums, drum machines, and synths! Still mostly nope, but I'll allow it!

i'll make exceptions haha. i think post-punk goth 80s flanging guitars are acceptable. and Eddie :w00t:
i can't think of an example of a flanger on drums that i've liked, but i also can't think of an example at all :D

If I'm not mistaken there's a lot of flanger on Tame Impala's Lonerism. On the drums and everything else haha

Yep. ^^ Lots of Beatles stuff too, of the tape variety.

Giorgio Moroder liked to put flanger on his synths too for great effect (I Feel Love, Tryouts For The Human Race, etc. ).

Beatles stuff is actually tape phasing...the best 'through zero' phaser I've ever heard is the AMS Tape Simulator rack..it's insane. The best flanger the Marshall Time Modulator 5002 rack..both of those were Martin Hannet favourites...and now v expensive.

The MXR Flanger is in all honesty similar to the Boss BF-2..but the MXR one is a lot nicer tonally...liquidy and natural.

Some Mcgeoch flang'ey links, together with his actual settings for permafrost:

If you don't like what John Mcgeoch did with one on a stand as mentioned..then yep you don't like flangers!
