Dual Channel overdrive+fuzz

Post by idropinus » Tue Oct 03, 2017 12:17 am

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a dual channel overdrive+fuzz to play math/noise rock.

I looked for over a hundred overdrives but no one has these specs that I want.

I play a jazzmaster through a Roland JC-120.

Do you have any idea?

What are the specs you're looking for? Dual overdrive+fuzz could cover quite a bit of ground!

Yeah, i know, I would just like a stream of consciousness of the ones you have in mind. I'm not searching for the "classic blues" sound, i would like something more particular than that. I want a defined sound, not a noise mess like a muff (i like it, but I already have one).

EQD Gray Channel, Smallsound/Bigsound Buzzz, Stonedeaf Kliptonite, Chicago Stompworks Fudge Scrambler, Empress Multidrive. Function FX Clusterfuzz isn't a dual, but it sounds like it could do it all. That Kliptonite looks interesting..

I'm actually kinda tempted to get a JHS/Boss Angry Driver and mod it to have two footswitches to switch between the two.

EDIT: EQD Spires too?

I think the big question is how well it will work with the JC120.

Since you mentioned noise rock: Death By Audio Interstellar Overdriver or Waveformer Destroyer.

You could look at an Earthquaker Hoof Reaper. The Tone Reaper (Tonebender) at lower gain is a great sounding overdrive. The Hoof is a muff but it is more articulate than most, you might get more clarity out of it in combination with the hoof reaper if you tweak the gain right.

Fuzzrocious a few dual mode fuzz/overdrive/distortions worth checking out.

I have always loved fuzz/distortion through a JC120, overdrive might be tricky but definitely achievable.

I've just boxed up two kit builds into a single enclosure, and I'm really happy with how they work together. It's a Frantone Cream Puff into a Catalinbread Hyperpak.

The Cream Puff is in the ballpark of an IC Big Muff, but the tone control is voiced completely differently, and is really interactive with the gain level. It stays pretty tight and controlled, even at high gain. The Hyperpak is based on the Tube Sound Fuzz/Red Llama, but cops more of a barking Hiwatt-ish drive with the gain past noon. Does a good dirty-clean boost at lower gain settings. Never tried either with a JC120, but I've heard the Red Llama works well with SS amps.

Something custom might be what you're looking for. MadeByMike does a great many dual dirt boxes for reasonable prices. Might be worth talking to him directly (check facebook) to see what he recommends, but defined overdrive/fuzz could be a Rat an Red Llama in one enclosure.

I have a stack of his pedals (all excellently made) and a few dual drives. I've an OCD/DLS (which probably isn't what you want) and a Dreambox (Dist+ and IC Big Muff with more controls than those pedals usually have. This has become my go to fuzz/dirt box).
a total idiot jackass

That's GREAT, but can I use it as an overdrive? I can't find a demo of someone using it with a low distortion.

I love that amp, remember that a classic bluesy Marshall tone is not what I'm looking for! So don't intend the "overdrive sound" in that sense.

They're all great, I really like the Smallsound/Bigsound Buzzz, I didn't know it. For Stone Deaf I prefer the Trashy Blonde to the Kliptonite. But again, the question is: I love the Smallsound/Bigsound Buzzz, but can I use it also as a more "transparent" and kinda "always on" sound? To have a "almost clean but fatter sound" and a "fuzzy strange distortion" on the same pedal, that can be melt together. Or do I need to buy two pedals?

Thanks. Yes, the distortion side is based on a vintage 1970s MXR Dist+, which works great as a crunchy overdrive. Technically it's a distortion circuit but the soft clipping characteristics of the germanium diodes gives it a nice break-up at low distortion settings.

... Or wait for the upcoming Reuss klon-type-circuit-going-into-rat-type-circuit artist signature pedal coming later this year ... (still undisclosed)

The Waveformer is just too much for me, I also already have the new EQD Data Corrupter

The Hoof Reaper is beatiful, the only thing that stops me from buying an overdrive/distortion from Earthquaker Devices (while I love all the other strange pedals they have) is that I saw some videos about the EQD Palisades, and i loved it. Then I had the chance to try it, and man... I don't know if it was the amp or something like that, but I didn't like it at all; so I kinda have the fear that the same thing could happen for their other distortions, too. But, from what I see in the videos, it's beautiful.

The Death by Audio Interstellar Overdrive DELUXE could be what I'm looking for. I don't know if it would be a bit too strange, and I'd also have the necessity of buying another "normal" overdrive for some parts, or keeping my old one (classic Ibanez TS9, I like it but I began to get bored of it).

Edit: I saw other videos of the The Death by Audio Interstellar Overdrive DELUXE and it seems to do also more "normal" sounds. Very very good.

Do you know something about its "Evil Twin"? It seems to attract me even more.
