No Sun dirt?
Anyone know what pedals No Sun uses for dirt? A few parts here remind me of Swervedriver or Ringo Deathstarr textures, so I was thinking maybe a HM-2 or a RAT, but I haven't been able to dial my RAT clone in close yet.

I've not heard of them before, but that doesn't sound like a Big Muff to me. It does sound a lot like Swervedriver though. That would be a Boss Bluesdriver into a Boss reverb pedal. He embellished with other pedals, but that is the core tone from a Jazzmaster of course.
With a Rat, hmm, into a Vox you can kind of get that tone with the Rat pushing the amp more as a crunchy overdrive and not letting too much of the "Rat tone" to take over, but the reverb is still essential.

Interesting. I knew Adam Franklin used a HM-2 for awhile, but it looks like he's now stacking two Blues Drivers in its place. I'd been thinking about picking up another pedal, fuzz or distortion, but the Rat is super versatile. I'll try it set as you suggest. I've got a Talisman on the board so reverb is covered. I really like the way that tone saws through the rest of the mix.fuzzjunkie wrote:I've not heard of them before, but that doesn't sound like a Big Muff to me. Re: No Sun dirt?
edit: from fb chatAll of the main dirt sounds on the record are Smallsound Bigsound Pedals. I (Jordon) use a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine as my main fuzz, which is all over the record. That and a Fuck Overdrive.
Ben used a Smallsound Bigsound Buzzz, the gain channel on his Science Sister, a Marshall Shred Master clone that he built, and a violet rams head muff. All of the tones that are similar to an HM-2 on the record are the Buzzz. I know he used an HM-2 on our last US tour, but he got it long after the record was recorded.

Cool and thanks! That pretty much solves it. I did some looking around at interviews, but didn't dig this up or missed it. Where did you find this?soggy mittens wrote:All of the main dirt sounds on the record are Smallsound Bigsound Pedals. On their facebook page it has pics of all those pedals, plus a Rat, Fuzz Face, Wooley Mammoth and Superfuzz around a red Jazzmaster, which I think is that oxblood red signature model. (QotSA?) but yes, Big Muff, Shredmaster and several SmallsoundBigsound pedals

Ram's Head was my guess if I had to be more specific than Big Muff. Nice.soggy mittens wrote:edit: from fb chatAll of the main dirt sounds on the record are Smallsound Bigsound Pedals. Those exact SS/BS tones are also all over my band's last record too.

Nice white/pink pedalboard. Listening to your band on Spotify now: great textures!

Kudos, soggy mittens, for the direct contact!
I'll check out your band, O Drones. I like that compact setup.

Re: No Sun dirt?
^^^ I do think it's a little funny that he went to the trouble of getting a SmallSound BigSound Buzz when the HM-2 is readily available, and then ended up getting an HM-2, while Adam Franklin uses the Bluesdriver now.
I wouldn't be surprised if in either case that Adam uses those pedals more as a crunchy boost for his amp rather than the pedal making his main distortion sound.

Re: No Sun dirt?
HM-2 and Buzzz aren't the same. The Boss take on a Superfuzz (which is what a Buzzz is) is the FZ-2.
