Acapulco Gold - Muff or model T?

Post by Paco » Mon Aug 21, 2017 12:01 am

I may trade an Infanem Driving notion for a new-ish V2 Acapulco Gold. EQD claims it to be a Sunn Model T kind of clone, but it sounds more like a Muff-like fuzz in the demos I've heard. Any first hand experience?

Yes, its an insane thing all of its making, it sounds incredible. My bandmate has one and it does a really different thing to a Big Muff, it really cuts through and sounds huge in the room, the demos don't really capture what it does, its hard to explain. I've never heard it suffer from "drop out" like other fuzzes/ODs. Sounds like an amp breaking up x1000, not as fuzzy as you'd think either. Obviously this opinion is dependant on relative setup, he uses an SG with p90s through a Silverface Bandmaster with hardly any other pedals.

VERY different from a muff.
It almost straddles the line between distortion and fuzz; and is just plain gnarly-HUGE. The bass player in our band uses mine and I just don't have the heart to ask for it back. It sounds incredible with bass.

I've been using one for awhile now. As said before, it's not really fuzz -- it's more direct, if that makes any sense. I use it when I need to blast through the gauze that is my band; usually just single note solos and themes, although it does sound magnificent with chords (almost too much, it's frightening).

Mine doesn't sound much like a muff to me either.

I've never had the opportunity to check out a Model T, but I'd say in relation to most transistor muffs the Acapulco Gold sounds less round and spongy/elastic and more buzzsaw-like. The AG is still very huge and semi-wooly sounding but tighter/harder edged. It's a cool sound, but I haven't wound up using it too much as it doesn't seem to get along that well for me w/ the Marshall/Orange/Vox type amps w/ the cabs I've got. It would probably get used more if I was playing the VT-22 or Fender type amps more. Might be pretty awesome for direct sounds or board into power amp type set ups too?

Personal experience is it's worked better for me for single note lines than chords.

I just got the Acapulco Gold, and it's AMAZING.

Yes, it's not muff-like and the online demos don't really capture the sound of it. Gnarly, LOOOOOOUD. It really is more of an extreme overdrive than a fuzz, but very balanced. I'm thinking of getting another one just to put it on top and explode my house windows

Do you know if the limited V1 is any different from the V2?

Has anyone used the AG for shoegaze type stuff? If so, did you try running it post-reverb and how did it sound?

the Acapulco gold is a great fuzz/drive, but doesn't really sound like a wide open model t. At least mine anyway. That said, I really like it. It's a flamethrower and doesn't take much to make it sound good.

Yeah, I use it instead of fuzz most of the time, but I use it AG --> Reverb (choose one: Aurora, Abbey, Procession) --> Delay. I have used it after a hall reverb and reverse reverb and I remember liking the results; I just haven't messed around with it enough in that order.

I normally put a Boss RV3 in front of it, and it's balancing great. I thought I would have to push the button a little more, but the volume works great with it. You shouldn't have a problem using it in spacey/shoegazey kind of things.
