This is a great thread. Tim, and Mary's guitar tones on Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements and Emperor Tomato Ketchup is just pure class. Tommorrow is Already Here has a very simple, droney guitar progression that is basic as it is genius. (Let's not forget that John McEntire produced Emperor Tomato) You can almost hear the sloppy fingers going through the rosewood. :?

I think, by looking at the band's old live videos on youtube, that the full, chimey sound is the product of an offset and a Fender Silverface Amp. At least on the early years. I've read on an interview (can't seem to find the link, sorry) that Tim used to record the guitars going through his synths modules, so it would warm the signal and give it the signature stereolab tone. Pretty sure about that.

I'm pretty sure Tim is a synth freak even more than a guitar freak. Stereolab synth use, I think, would be an infinite but amazing thread.

Didn't he play mustangs for a while? I definitely remember seeing him live with a LPB Mustang (competition stripe?) on at least a couple of occasions.
I can share some memories to this:
I had this Mustang in my hands and played it a bit.
A few years a go I had a amp tech man here in Berlin Neukölln. Tim had also a little studio room there with a bit equipment.
I saw this Mustang and I was allowed to take it for playing.
This Mustang was an original 1969 I guess. A green faded LPB like the one in Nirvana´s "smells like..." video. :?
I have to say that this Mustang from Tim had an extremely good neck for me! Very narrow at the nut! I felt totally in love with this Mustang.
It sounded mega nice, very transparent, resonating, twangy, powerful, all at the same time...
I asked for buying it but he said it is his main and most beloved guitar...
The Mustang had a few modifications with the pickups I remember. A kind of "treble boost" switch? ... I don´t remember exactly...
I am always on the search for another Mustang with such a neck...
It starts... when it begins.

His current board seems to have lots of modulation options. A/DA and Electro-Harmonix flangers and a Bi-Phase clone:

This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I LOVE the sound of early Stereolab. My amateur study of this subject is Tim Gane didn't really play Jazzmasters-- those were the other ladies in the band; you need a Jaguar. At some point during college when a lot of beer had been consumed I asked him, and I think he said it was all about Jaguars.

I started with Strats, switched Jazzmasters, and then I got a Jaguar. Did some recording with the Jaguar and a Silverface Fender Super Reverb; when I heard the playback I was like, "holy shit! This is the Stereolab tone!"

Any basic OD will be fine, but it's really just about a Fender tube amp and a Jaguar.
Yuppers, i have the stereolab clean tone right now playing through a silverface bassman 100, very CRISPY
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

OMG running off a bunch of wall warts plugged into power bars... that would drive me crazy to set up and transport routinely, never mind the reliability issue.

StevenO will be heartened to see that the Randy's Revenge can be useful in a band setting after all.

Also, I said Laetitia could borrow The Punkstang, but I specifically said "No outdoor concerts!" Fuming! >:(

I read someone from Stereolab uses a Chase Bliss Thermae in this recent tour. I'd be interested to hear that in a live context, because I it seems like a challenge based on my experience, unless you just use it's more "normal" settings.

Yeah, some pedals do some really cool shit, but working that into a live situation can be difficult, except maybe just to indulge yourself.

But the fact that they can, and still be “normal”, makes them twice the pedal. Purchase justified.
