Totally worth it. Don't get me wrong, the Catalinbread Echorec sounds good, but with the Boonar, you get much more. You get that same lush rhythmic delay, but you can pick and choose which heads to use, you have an input gain control (for different output pickups), a tape age knob, the option of modern vs vintage sound (not sure of the actual difference as I've only ever had it on modern), trails vs true bypass, AND you also get the spill-over mode which sounds so cool. It's more money, but it's a lot more too.

Damn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that! You provide a compelling case for the Boonar!

Certainly tops it w.r.t. features. How about the sound quality of the actual repeats, is it on par with the Echorec?

I think Dan and Mick have the best tone that you an actually get on your own (i.e, realistic).

I really enjoyed my Echorec, but I didn't like how the rotary knob didn't have any notches or clicks when switching between them. Considering that the Echorec has 12 modes, that's a pretty small space to hit dead-on, you know? I just wish the Boonar wasn't as expensive: I'd get one for my bass rig

I had that Boonar v1 pedal for a bit. It's cool, but it just didn't 'do it' for me for some reason.

(My problem is a like tap tempo too much. )

slight detour: I think the Boss RV-500 does a better RE-201 than the RE-20 (plus: modulation)

Well, after more research (mostly in the form of watching YouTube videos) I'm thinking the Catalinbread and Boonar are equally good sounding.

I'm surprised that the Catalinbread selector switch doesn't have notches to designate the settings - I had assumed it would. The ease of selecting playback head ps on the Boonar is the biggest advantage for me. I'm not sure I'd mess with the modulation that much - I'd probably set it at a fairly low level and leave it there. Similarly with the input level.

So, I'm still no closer to deciding between them. In the meantime I'll check out some of the other options, just to confuse myself further

You and I think alike. My EQD Space Spiral is the first time I've really loved modulated delay, but I tend to set the Boonar low on the tape age. Also similar in how the switches for the heads were the main deciding factor. If the Echorec had notches for the switch, I probably would've kept it. It did sound good.

Then don't listen to the Echosex from Gurus Amps! Haha. It's easily the best sounding of the 3, BUT only has one tape "head". I bought my Echorec before I knew the Boonar existed and don't regret it at all. If you really want a Binson Echorec pedal, maybe start with the Catalinbread as it's the cheapest priced? You could always resell it and likely not lose much. Or at least find a local shop to try one.

so lately i been using a wee analog delay i got for £15 locally and it does that tape echo flutter really well. its called a donner yellow fall

I'm gonna take the advice and go for the Catalinbread. if the rotary switch ends up bugging me too mch, I may jump across to the Boonar at some point.

Any delay pedal with a decay or filter setting on the repetition is going to get you pretty close to tape delay, 'cause that's what it is after all, darker repetitions.
