Whats your fave amp with a big muff?

Post by Kadenray » Fri May 20, 2016 8:09 am

Still on my quest for the best loud Amp to pair with a big muff. Ive toyed with the Idea of Fender twins, Ampeg Vt-22, Vox ac100cph. I know muffs need headroom, but now I'm hearing the need mid range too. Sooooooo what in your opinion has pretty cleans, Then makes a big muff sound big and great once stomped down on in a loud band setting? I love the cleans on my ac15 normal channel around 10:00 if that helps at all.

I didn't tried the NYC Muff I had with many amps but I liked a lot through a late 70s JC120...

In my experience with the brands below I'd rank the amps I like the most with muffs like this:

Fender
Ampeg
Vox
Marshall (really did not dig a muff + marshal)

Honestly, I'd say a twin. If you run into the disappearing in the mix issue stack it with a mid bumping overdrive or a eq pedal. Fenders with 10 " speakers don't really seem to suffer the mid loss issues to me.

It also depends on the sound you are going for, so your results may vary.

It kind of sounds like I need a fender super reverb then, since it has 10" speakers. Would it have enough headroom for a big muff over a very loud drummer?

I really like my JCM 800 2204 with big muffs. And I think open-back fender type amps sound too harsh with them. Twin Reverb reissue and Bassman combo that is.

Super Reverbs are loud, and big. Myself personally, i'd never be able to make one break up (I used to use a 71 4X10 Bassman for a couple years and never had it to the breaking point), but I don't know your situation.

You also have the Vibrolux Reverb which is a 2X10 if a 4X10 seems too unmanageable. My VR didn't seem as loud as a Super Reverb or the Bassman (I did get it to break up), even though its the same watts (different transformers I believe).

There is also the late 70's Ultra Linear Super Reverbs, they were 85 watts, like a twin. Headroom for days and usually dirt cheap.

Like I said before, it all depends on the sound you are going for, and what type of muff you have. I don't like my Sovtek muff with Fender amps, but with a Vox and Ampeg it sings. My late 70's muff loved Fender amps, was iffy with my Ampeg and Vox, and got me close to the Siamese Dream Pumpkins sound with my JCM800. My newer muffs take to most of my amps really well for a variety of sounds.

Thanks for the info. I play with an early 2001-2002 NYC Big Muff reissue. My drummer comes from a hardcore background and is use to playing with half stacks. if it helps give you an idea of how loud I need to be, My ac15 cranked as loud as it will go is still drowned in the mix. I'm interested in the ultra linear Super reverb. that might get the job done.

depends on the muff and the amp and the guitar. for bass, it has to be my modded nyc (tone stack close to a russian muff with higher gain transistors) into my modded fender bassman.

for guitar. i always liked the tweed bassman and i once tried one with a black russian and was really blown away by the sound.
offset guitars resident bass player.

They are my favorite band of the last 5 years probably and I just started to listen them a few months ago. Extremely strange that they didn't get much recognition.

It's way too sad that Yoshimura died :(
Tabuchi Hisako, the other guitarist since 2002 and Yoshimura's wife, is maybe my favourite guitarist of all time.
